I have to disagree with you on this note. It takes GM years just to develop a vehicle for mass production. They also just spent a billion dollars building a three cylinder Diesel engine that by all accounts is obsolete. Their factories are geared for gasoline vehicles and it will take years to turn them around. Also what good will it do them without the batteries to power them? By the time GM has finished discussing what to do Tesla will be in full swing producing 2 million EV’s a year and beginning production on three new models. The one EV GM produced has been taken out of production for a year. BMW and VW have already awoken to the reality of the difficulty it takes to produce an electric vehicle. The best they have come up with barely matches a 2013 Tesla. Let’s not even mention the tons of debt the Big Three are toting around. If there is no government intervention only Ford has a slight shot at surviving this. In the event that they do they will be playing second fiddle to Tesla for decades to come. Tesla just finished their Shanghai factory a year ago and is already expanding it. Giga Berlin will go into production this year with Giga Austin in January of next year bringing them up to five factories. As the two new factories complete their ramp up there is talk of Tesla starting on their India and Australia factories in mid 2022. Tesla can build a factory in 12 to 18 months, GM will take at least 2 years turning an existing factory around. There is a reason that Tesla is number one right now and by a huge margin that’s only getting larger. Tesla’s biggest competitor is going to be China, no one else is even in the picture.Tesla might be an innovator, but they're nowhere near the ability to mass produce EV's to the degree GM, BMW or VW can.
Tesla is about at capacity turning out 500K units per year. GM can build that many at just one plant running one shift on weekdays, and they have 11 plants just in the US.
