See above. It's a somewhat better bet this time, only because the lion's share of the existing "US" management is going the way of the dinosaur.

Why would BofA, who has both the existing HP and US credit cards (IIRC) and is a huge customer of US in CLT allow itself to be outbid (that the winning bidder has been trying to break into the US credit card market and might be up for a risky venture is interesting, but only a tangent to the question)?
 
Word here is that BofA walked away from US rather than submit to pay-to-play tactics.
