Coming soon to a museum near you - two communication headsets.

Set one belonged to Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who you know as the captain of the Charlotte-bound "Miracle on the Hudson" flight. They were found in the cockpit of the US Airways jetliner after it was brought last summer to the Carolinas Aviation Museum, where it is on display to the public.

I remember that day well. I was outside walking and my cell phone went off. It was an Alaska pilot friend, he started by saying, "I didn't know Airbus' floated, must be all that plastic." My response was, "huh?" Headed straight home to watch it unfold on TV. Very proud moment not only for US Airways, but for the piloting profession as a whole.

Amazing airmanship aside, the one thing 1549 really drove home to me was how far we've come with social networking, and how it's totally upended the way we get our news. The fact that someone could take a pic (from the freakin' wing, no less), and have it become available to anyone in the world w/in an hour, is to me, stunning.

Speaking of captains...

You have captains like Sully, and captains like this one:

Coast guard shouts at capt to go back to help ship
By COLLEEN BARRY, Associated Press – 18 minutes ago
ROME (AP) — An Italian coast guard official vehemently demanded that the captain go back to his crippled cruise ship to oversee its evacuation, but the captain repeatedly resisted, according to a shocking audiotape made public Tuesday.

When one ponders that fateful day, recent events should remind us that Leadership and courage take many forms. For Instance one need only contrast this event to Flight 1549. The efforts of the US crew speak for themselves.

They say that a captain always goes down with his ship .

Apparently that adage doesn't apply for Francesco Schettino
, who basically abandoned the Costa Concordia after it ran aground over the weekend. Not only did he duck out on the thousands of passengers he put at risk in an attempt to show off to his friends, but he also apparently lied to the Italian coast guard about what actually happened.

Not sure that a captain has to down with the ship; but a captain does have to make sure that everyone else is off first.

I must say that I kinda like the cut of Gregorio De Falco's jib.
