Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said his force had faced "extraordinary levels of violence from groups of criminals intent on committing widespread disorder" on Tuesday.

Mr Johnson told those gathered that those responsible for the violence "face punishment they will bitterly, bitterly regret".

“If you walk into somebody’s office with your hair uncombed and a pick in the back, and your shoes untied, and your pants half down, tattoos up and down your arms and on your neck, and you wonder why somebody won’t hire you? Reports seem to focus on an incident where a black man was shot by the police in a very poor part of London. Then in the days after the initial riot it appears that the reason for the continued burning and looting is purely economic i.e looting of shops for personal gain.

I've not seen any suggestions of any aspect being political. Once again you have a situation where misconduct whether true or not has inflamed a neighborhood.

I see the troll was at it again. All anyone has to do is read the reports to see that politics was not part of the issue.

I have not read anything to indicate that the looting as for financial gain. From what I have read the looting is largely the result of the heard mentality. The people are just ticked off. Similar to the Rodney King riots in LA.

There was an English Reporter on one of the talking head shows either on Fox or MSNBC (I was surfing back and forth) who clearly stated in his opinion that much of the latest rioting was strictly of the looting variety, "Young people wanting stereos" were his exact words. I thought of the Rodney King angle as well. At least until I heard the Brit I just mentioned.

As to the sub title of the thread, "Coming to a city here soon". I predicted this my Senior year of HS in 1972 that "Blood would flow in the streets in my lifetime" as citizens challenged their government. I believed it then and I believe it now. We got closer then I'm comfortable with in Madison, WI. I'd like to be wrong but I don't think I am.

It's the rich people, the people that got businesses, and that's why all of this is happening, because of rich people. So we're just showing the rich people we can do what we want.

I don't care if the black man was Wiccan! For police to use deadly force there has to be a legitimate reason. Hearings need to be held and evidence tested to determine the truth.

Apparently the good citizens of the Tottenham area of London weren't willing to wait for a verdict.

The shot officer went home after hospital treatment. The Independent Police Complaints Commission was investigating last night. A spokesman said shooting began as cops tried to make an arrest.

Rioting is always wrong and oft times people react to real and perceived threats/Injustices. I prefer the rule of law and in this case there needs to be a fair, open and honest investigation. I wasn't there, didn't see it, don't know what happened.

Leonard Pelletier rots in a Federal Prison due to the blatant racism against Indians in SD. So why wouldn't the Brits do the same to a black Muslim? Railroad him off to prison? I mean it's not unheard of

If it was that English guy from Sky? something news. He was saying he was a reporter but he also lived in that area. I saw him and did a you tube search and found some others. I do not know how many are looting verses rioting but it seems there may be more to the looting thing than I first thought.

If you're trying to link these riots to the blatant socialism I don't think we've established a "Cause and Effect" link yet. It sounds good if it's the blame game we're playing.

However, if you want to tie the overall global recession and looming world wide debt crisis creating the economic conditions that make this type of rioting occur, that's a different story
