Fuel is one of the industry's top costs and has pushed some carriers into merger talks in an effort to reduce expenses and competition. Talks between Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp. had stalled due to a labor impasse, though a report in London's Financial Times indicated that there is still hope for some kind of deal to pass muster.

The paper cited comments from Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, Air France-KLM's deputy chief executive, that the carriers are exploring a ``light version'' of a merger. The carriers may offer services jointly but keep their flying operations separate to avoid trying to combine pilot seniority lists, Gourgeon told the paper.
