On Alaska's earnings call on Thursday, Andrew Harrison, vice president of planning and revenue management, said the two airlines are talking.

Yes they do, but I dont think they are talking about a merger, more about increased marketing and codesharing.
 
"Codeshare modified to accommodate full AA/US codesharing plus 15% codesharing with domestic air carriers, both exclusive of AS and HA carve outs."

Who knows what this code share agreement in the MOU allows...
 
An improved codeshare with Alaska would fix that big hole you see in the combined AA/US route map in the northwest
