Southwest misses Runway

Well, at KALB WN 737s take off regularly from a 7200 foot runway, as does 95% of airline traffic out of Albany International. RWY 1-19 is the longest of the two runways. Must be long enough to safely allow WN''s non-stop to Las Vegas.

Whats the problem with WN using 8-26 at TUL?

Probably nothing. Its just an observation that when both runways are open, pilots at other airlines use the longer one. That extra 3K feet of runway could be handy though in an emergency.

Perhaps, ITrade, he was talking about hundreds and hundreds of people dying...something that SWA can say has never happened to them, can your company say that? Bet not.

All that I can say is that the WN safety record speaks volumes for itself.  If the pilots are so crazy at WN, why have they landed EVERYBODY safely in 30+ years.

Some people in Burbank might disagree with that assessment.

AA Mech, your logic seems reasonable. However, on takeoff, WN pilots generally will go to the shorter runway if it will save time (i.e. money). Most pilots after 80 knots are committed to flying with the exception of an engine failure or fire. Once V1 is called, you''re going. On a 737 flying from TUL to DAL you''re only gonna eat up 3000 ft by the time you''re committed to flying. Rejecting TO at this point will leave you more than enough pavement to stop, be it a 7000ft or 10,000ft runway. Now, throw in a heavy jet going to LAS or a wet runway with a low "stopping margin", just about every WN pilot will take the time to go to the longer runway. While most are willing to help in any way to keep the company be profitable, we''re not naive enough to know that they won''t be holding our hand when sitting at the end of the green table trying to explain why we didn''t use the longer runway.

Thanks for the explanation. Most WN flights I see are going to DAL as they are the old -200''s.
