I was in the 727 training department at Piedmont when we began going to SAN to pick up the 727-200s purchased from PSA for the sole purpose of responding to the People Express threat.  I was on the crew that took delivery of the first one.  It was 1981, NOT 1982 or 1983.
 
Do the research.  People Express began operations on April 30, 1981.  Not 1982 or 1983.
 
At what time People Express started CLT service is not germane to the topic of responding to low-cost threats.

I worked for PI in EWR started 7/1/82.  We had 10 daily flights when I started. We did NOT start flighting PE until late 82, early 83.  No need to research it, I was there.  Didnt get 72s into EWR until 83

When I few line trips it was out of ORF and lived in ORF  from 1980 to 1984. (My actual line bid was ORF-based)  We were head-to-head with People Express on ORF-EWR using B727-200s on day one...30 April 1981.  I was there.

Let's not forget that the current CEO of Spirit (or Spir-sh*t) as I call them, is a US Alum, Ben Baldanza, who is very shrewd at attracting the very people he despised when he was at US.
