Whats the worse that could happen?

Iran president takes over oil ministry temporarily and could become president of OPEC.

Iran, the second largest exporter of crude in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, currently holds the presidency of the cartel, a position it is holding for the first time since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The oil minister's dismissal also comes amid Ahmadinejad's efforts to change the structure his government, which has become the subject of a political showdown with the parliament.

Oil is not the answer, it's the addiction.
Thanks for sharing that tired talking point.

Well it's a little more complex than "Drill Baby Drill" but not by much.

We have enough natural resources in Coal, Natural Gas, Oil, Wind, Geo Thermal, Hydro-Electric plus new technologies being fully developed like Solar and Hydrogen in addition to Nuclear Power to carry us through to the next millennium without having to purchase a drop of oil from elsewhere.

Energy independence makes us a VERY dangerous country as most are not. Think what energy independence gives us as a nation.

JOBS - With a Capital "J", not friggin' Mickey D's minimum wage jobs, Actual jobs that will enable you to buy a house and raise a family, WHAT A CONCEPT

More High Paying Jobs equals what? More tax revenue to lower the debt.

Balance of trade deficit lowered if not eliminated strengthening the dollar.

More government revenue from oil, gas and mineral leases at market rates, not the sweetheart deals of today.

We tank the price of crude worldwide to a fair market rate which drys up a lot of the funding for terrorism. OPEC can only slow production to a point as member countries have economy's built around oil producing a certain level of income. With a little luck they'll be back to trading camels in no time

Couple the above with a pull back of our international empire and we have a shot at full employment, sound money, lower taxes with a very high level of homeland security as we can't be leveraged by foreign powers unless we think it in our best interests.

Now does the above mean we abandon environmental concerns? I'd say quite the opposite, we make sure we have streamlined permit procedures that allow companies to get up and producing quickly and environmental standards that are stringent, enforced swiftly with enough punitive damages that will make it in a company's best interests to run safe operations.

We can do this and be free and prosperous as we were in the past. However it will take a commitment similar to the effort that won WWII and I'd argue that this time the stakes are higher. We can tweak the tax code to create an alternative energy trust fund that takes a small portion of energy companies profits to fund research so when we do begin to run out we have the technologies in place to hit the ground running and remain energy independent Long after our kids grand kids are dead. Now is the time to take the bull by the horns and develop every type of energy source we can as IMO our future as a nation is at stake

Thats true, maybe the title should be more like "All of the above"?

Hey, be grateful, I'm one of the few left that doesn't have you on ignore. I enjoy a good laugh.

Your comments are SO insightful, how could we ever have a discussion without them?

And now for something completely different.

Obama Shifts to Speed Oil and Gas Drilling in U.S.

WASHINGTON —
President Obama, facing voter anger over high gasoline prices and complaints from Republicans and business leaders that his policies are restricting the development of domestic energy resources, announced Saturday that he was taking several steps to speed oil and gas drilling on public lands and waters.

That has to be BS.....MsTree said the public would never hold the President accountable for high gas and energy prices.

Smoke and mirrors: he's said the same thing before.

The White House is making the policy shifts after taking intense criticism from Republicans in recent weeks over energy policy as gas prices have topped $4 per gallon in some parts of the country.
Many of the proposals are incremental expansions of existing policies and had been set in motion prior to Saturday’s announcement. It’s also unclear by how much the plan will increase domestic oil production.

Obama made the exact same pledge over a year ago, immediately preceding his inexorable and unprecedented moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Sadly, the New York Times was credulous enough to believe it and carried water for Obama by headlining a story at that time titled, “Obama to Open Offshore Areas to Oil Drilling for First Time.” That didn’t exactly work out according to plan.

Excellent post. Too bad rhetoric and bloviating drown out any sort of pragmatic solution(s) in today's America...

Pragmatic solutions like using taxpayer dollars to fund Brazil's oil drilling instead of our own?
Pragmatic solutions like using taxpayer dollars to incentivize (coal powered) useless electric/hybrids that nobody wants....at 40k a pop?

How are we to generate enough electricity for 300+ million US citizens?

Yes, pragmatic common-sense solutions that balance our energy needs, jobs, and the environment.
Common sense solutions are whats needed but its non of those that are only endorsed by the minority left and GW fanatics.
