NEW YORK - A court-appointed mediator said all but three of 95 wrongful-death and personal-injury lawsuits against airlines, airport security companies and others stemming from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks have settled.

In a report dated Tuesday, Sheila L. Birnbaum said the individual settlements are confidential, but the aggregate total of the settlements is about $500 million.

The report was released Thursday as part of a judge's order memorializing the report.

The cases were brought by victims or their families who opted out of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, which was established by Congress after the attacks.

More than 5,500 claimants participated in the September 11th Fund, receiving more than $7 billion. Persons who made claims with the fund were forbidden to pursue a separate court action.

Three remaining wrongful death cases - two involving American Airlines Flight 11 and one involving United Airlines Flight 175 - will now go to trial. No trial date has been set.
