ok guys this might be a little far fetched but how about usairways buys delta mainly for the european routes then after that goes after nw for the asian routes. remember parker wants this delta deal done before delta exits bankruptcy which is pretty soon. nw has not yet given any date on exiting bankruptcy so far as i know . so once this delta deal is done nw will still be in bankruptcy and parker could go after them.i am sure he could easily get the financing for that. there will be no overlap at all if you look at it and parker ends up with a huge airline. i know put the pipe down .but think about it for a minute. you just never know in this business.

Amazingly, route overlap is NOT the salient issue with the DOJ or the DOT. What seems to keep coming up is that the powers that be want to see us all fight it out over the market share and drive prices down to unsurvivable levels while employees scratch each others eyes out and fuel prices take an already hypoxic margin and remove the rest of the oxygen from it.

We have just come off of a 45 billion dollar string of losses and all the analysts can do is talk about how the merging of airlines will be bad for consumers. Ok, so let us all bleed out until sowthwest is the only carrier around, then they'll be happy. Nothing against southwest by the way; they have a bullet-proof business model that everyone is trying to emulate as long as the "departments" stay out of it.

Couldn't have said it better. Even during "good years" an airline's profit margin is razor-thin, compared to other industrys. I don't think the airlines can take away much more. And, I guess the general public would just like to see a bunch of airlines in bankruptcy (or on the verge) at all times.

I agree, when you see airline tickets selling for less than a bus ticket, there is something wrong. People expect to fly from coast to coast in a few hours on a multi-million dollar A/C for $99. It costs over $20 to take a friggen 15 minute cab ride just to get to the airport. I will be able to accept these type of fares when I can go buy a new Escalade for $5k. 😉

Here we go again with the low fare whining.

Those fares are advance purchase, limited availability. You can't just hop in like a taxi. Car prices and taxi fares are pretty much the same every day.

A taxi driver will wait for me while I put my luggage in the trunk. Most airlines (Southwest being the exception) will slam the doors in your face if you're not on board 10 minutes early, even if you are running to the gate from a delayed inbound connecting flight.

With the nickel-and-diming fees, virtually nil in-flight service, arm-and-leg last minute fares and change fees, I don't feel sorry for airlines that have to stoop to $99 fares to try to get customers back who switched to Southwest, JetBlue, the car, or just staying home.

AMEN TO THAT!!!
