A Looming AMT Shortage?

“The market is having problems right now for the first time in my 45 years with the aviation business,” said Nance. “Especially regional carriers and nighttime cargo carriers are desperate right now. These new rules put them in a real corner.”

How desperate can they be when they are still only offering $20,000 a year?

Like I said I'm desperate to find $2/gallon gasoline, cant find any, but I can buy all I want for $3.90/gallon.

This problem began when people without A&P's were allowed to put tools on aircraft. What business wants is an A&P mechanic signing off work for a bunch of low cost 3rd world labor.

Timco anyone?

Maybe the libtards should think about that the next time they show support for the Democratic agenda of illegals flooding our country instead of calling anyone who opposes illegal immigration a racist (a favored libtard tactic).

This is also exactly why I would like to see temp services banned. All they really do is act as an agent for illegal labor. If the business using the labor gets caught using illegal labor no big deal since THEY did not actually employ them. It is a scam. Any fool paying attention could see it.

Federal agents detained 27 workers at TIMCO, 24 of whom are charged with being in the United States illegally. Most came from labor contractors who provide TIMCO with temporary workers.

You want to really help the American worker.... get rid of these temp services. Make workers liable for their work instead of having 1 licensed A&P act as a scapegoat for a whole team of untrained, unreliable workers.

For years, when corporate america would defend high executive compensation, they loved to reiterate "MARKET conditions and MARKET rate as the reason for paying obscene compensation. But do you notice that when it comes to labor, MARKET conditions and MARKET rates no longer figure into the equation? Especially when it comes to aircraft mechanics. If the airlines were so concerned with a pending aircraft mechanics shortage, they would be moving to make the job more attractive as a career once again. Instead you will see more and more outsourcing and eventually more pressure to reduce the qualifications required to  become mechanic. Who knows, one day very few license holders will be overseeing "helpers" with no licenses even on the line.

My understanding is that AA no longer sends our 757's to Timco. But that still does not address the issues with temp workers and illegals turning a wrench on US metal.

I was sitting there in 89 when Bob Crandall stated that a mechanic is a mechanic no matter where or what he works on.  He went on to say that a mechanic was only worth $10 per hour.  Not long after that AA had a problem getting A&P mechanics to hire on at $10 per hour while everyone else in the industry were paying much more to start.  Many left AA after getting a couple of years experience and made AA's problem even worse.  The TWU was faced with this and approached AA with a plan.  Instead of insisting AA raise the rates of pay for A&P mechanics, they created the Jr. Mechanic Upgrade Program for any career cleaner, stock clerk or fleet service clerk who wanted a free A&P license.  This saved AA lots of money and created an opportunity for members of other work groups who wanted the A&P pay scale but didn't want to invest the time and money to get their license and could pass a junior high school level math test.  Not surprisingly our TWU International ATD Rep Sean Doyle is a recipient of this TWU welfare program.  On another note I asked the legendary local 514 president Ed Wilson when we could expect the Jr. Pilot Upgrade Program for AMTs?  I cannot print his response.  This is when I first became an AMFA supporter.  For the record: I do not have any problem with anyone who took advantage of this program.  My problem is with the TWU who ignored an opportunity to get the AMTs at AA a raise to what the other Airlines were paying.

Good point.. The last thing the TWU wants in one classification to be be considered more skilled than another.

Exactly and all of these were the TWU's idea.  The TWU did also have a lower class of stock clerk called warehouseman but that was quickly abolished.  OSM and AMTO still exist but still earn much less than AMTs.  Shows you what the TWU thinks of mechanics doesn't it?  Also the dirty secret is that at local 514 there were members receiving food stamps while paying union dues to the TWU.  Their union did not secure a living wage for them but demanded dues nonetheless.

That is because TWU has embraced socialism/communism.

This is their version of "wealth redistribution" and an attempt to ape their Democrat masters.

Classic.

+1

TWU did whatever it needed to do to keep passing contracts. It made sure that Tulsa was the majority and accommodated the AMT's in Tulsa by offering new titled positions for less pay. As long as a deal was struck so Tulsan's did not have to pack up and move their families to places like NY,LAX,SFO,ORD and so on. TWU came back and said we will get it back next contract but in the mean time you still have a job in Tulsa. That is where the animosity started. The Union started the divide and conquer not the company.

Food Stamps living in Tulsa working for American? Really?

When I started American Airlines they were only paying $7.00 an hour.

Junior Fleet Service. Another gift from the TWU.

Building cleaners started at $6.00 an hour.

Yes, the last union meeting I went to it was actually talked about.  I asked what any union is doing agreeing to wages that would not allow someone to feed their families and I was told the TWU did not represent anyone who was not working for the company yet so whatever starting wage AA wanted to pay they didn't care.  Nice huh?  Gee wonder why I have never been back?
