In August of 2001, US Airways had 46,000 employees.

4 years later and after completing a merger to become the 5th largest airline in the country, the combined entity has 38,000 employees.

8000 fewer people. Try and imagine the scope of that number.

I wish all of you the best as you move forward in this new chapter. This airline was built on the backs of tens of thousands of employees -- active and furloughed.

Make them proud to have been a part of your collective history.

In August of 2001 there were 10,400 F/As. There are now 4,300 active at mainline, not inclusing the 300 at MAA who will be gone again soon.

In August of 2001 there were around 7,000 Mechanic and Related employees at US, now there is around 2,000 or so. (not counting HP)

bruce lakefield and his team did do a great job didn't they?
hey what was the name of that loser airline you tout?? i seem to have forgotten it already.
btw- using caps is a violation of our posting rules there newbie....

It's interesting that 700UW was the ONLY one of you who posted a statistic that even acknowledged that there are former HP employees in the new US Airways. A foreshadowing of the future of this merger?

The point was that you didn't even consider that there might also be some HP employees who have lost their jobs over the past 4 years. From a headcount standpoint, EVERY airline is smaller today than it was in 2001.

AA had something like 100,000 employees when I started in 2000. It has about 65,000 (IIRC) today. And, that is without 2 trips to bankruptcy. Lord only knows what will be left if we do have to go there.

My apologies. I was not aware that America West had furloughed.

I was aware only that you were hiring pilots prior to the merger. I'm no longer in the airline industry so i'm rather out of the loop.

Did not intend to exclude you. The intent of this post was to remind the US Airways employees as they celebrate to remember those who lost their jobs in the restructuring.

Last I heard HP was hiring. They are one of the few airlines that has not had to layoff half of its staff. It would be nice to see US grow for a change.

bruce did sucker doug but how can you say hp is a looser airline you have been in bankruptcy sine when 2001 maybe also you guys were in the grave with the hole being filled so who is the bigger looser and the us airways name was kept because its better known across the usa even though it has a name for crap service

I think the point of the original post wasn't to sleight the HP - err, US-West employees but to illustrate the scale of the shrinkage on the US-East side. Even after a merger with a not-so-small airline, US is still 8,000 smaller than in 2001.

So, in fairness to our friends on the US-West side, some numbers from BTS. Keep in mind that they use Full Time Equivalent employees, not total employees, and that their numbers are by carrier operating certificate, not carrier, so PDT, PSA, and ALQ (in 2001) are not included in the US-East numbers.

July 2001:
US - 44,502
HP - 12,507
Total - 57,009

July 2005:
US - 21,715
HP - 11,941
Total - 34,656

Funny US has won the airline service ratings before have you?

And maybe since you only have six years at HP you need to be educated.

Go read this and maybe you will see the light:

HP History

Oh by the way, US filed for Bankruptcy the first time in August of 2002 and emerged in March of 2003 and the second time was was the current case.

Don't let the facts get in your way.

they are not currenty hiring aircraft mechanics at this time they just laidoff i believe 6 people in bwi but i think they all were lucky enought to get jobs at other citys but how long will that last
