Teamsters and Communications Workers Form Alliance

Unions Jointly Organizing Workers at Newly Merged Piedmont Airlines

WASHINGTON, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In a strong showing of labor unity on
behalf of Allegheny and Piedmont customer service and ramp employees at the
newly merged Piedmont Airlines, the presidents of two of the nation's largest
labor unions, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Communication
Workers of America, signed an agreement forming an alliance to launch a joint
organizing campaign for the workers. Allegheny and Piedmont, wholly-owned
subsidiaries of U.S. Airways, formally merged July 1, 2004.
The Teamsters and the CWA, whose combined membership is over 2 million,
together represent nearly 100,000 in the airline industry. Considering the
insecurity facing all workers in the industry today, the unions said it was in
the best interests of the workers if the unions joined forces rather than
competed against one another for the right to represent them.
"This historic partnership will provide a great opportunity for successful
organizing and representation of the customer service agents at the newly-
merged Piedmont Airlines," said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President.
"Combined, our two unions have tremendous resources available to draw upon in
representing the workers' interests."
"This partnership was formed in the interests of airline employees who
face great uncertainty because of the upheaval in their industry," said Morton
Bahr, President of the Communication Workers of America. "We look forward to
working together to bring the highest quality of representation to these
workers."
The Teamsters already represent the customer service and ramp agents at
the former Allegheny Airlines and the Communication Workers have been working
for over a year with union activists at Piedmont to bring the agents union
representation and a collective bargaining agreement. Each union represents
tens of thousands of workers at dozens of carriers, including United, U.S.
Airways, America West, Continental, and Southwest.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents
more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women throughout the United States
and Canada.

Looks like the TWU is dropping one spot in the Airline Industry with 60 thousand members along with the IAM who represents a large group. Amfa is a long way down the list!

looks like the twu will be dropping even further once AMFA represents the mechanics craft & class at AA. NOT a matter of "IF" but "WHEN"

What was the word the Teamsters used to describe the TWU leadership again? Inept?

Everyone knows that both the CWA and the Teamsters are better than the TWU. However AFL-CIO rules make it nearly impossible for TWU members to shed the TWU.

I wish those unions and their members the best of luck.
