I don't know about flying INTO LHR, but when I was connecting to KL
FROM LHR, I was directed to a bus that operated from a gate before you get to immigration and customs.

They used to do passport control and you'll clear security at least once going to the Flight Connection Center, but you shouldn't need to reclaim/recheck your bags at Customs.
