-- The first passenger plane equipped with a system to repel shoulder-fired missiles successfully completed its flight, a British defense and aerospace company announced Wednesday.

The "JetEye" infrared missile-defense system was tested on an American Airlines flight that took off July 11, according to a statement from BAE Systems.

The plane flew from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport in California, the company said.

The JetEye system works by detecting the heat-seeking missiles and then firing a laser, which diverts the missile.

American Airlines refused to make the system mandatory on all trips, but agreed to cooperate with the tests.

The flight represents the final phase of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Counter-Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) program, designed to test the suitability of missile-protection equipment for commercial aircraft.

Previously, the technology was successfully evaluated on an American Airlines test aircraft and an ABX Air Inc. cargo aircraft.

The missile-protection equipment will be installed on two more American Airlines 767-200 aircraft for daily cross-country flights through March 2009. Engineers will evaluate the system's maintainability and reliability, as well as suitability for the airline industry. No missiles will be fired at these flights.

"BAE Systems worked closely with DHS and the airline industry to develop an effective response to potential terrorist threats," said Burt Keirstead, JetEye program director for BAE Systems in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Homeland Security officials said in January there is no specific threat of these weapons being fired at planes.

Taliban forces, however, successfully used shoulder-fired missiles against Soviet helicopters in Afghanistan. Terrorists tried, unsuccessfully, in 2002 to shoot down an Israeli passenger jet in Kenya with them.

Insurgents hit a cargo plane in Baghdad the following year, but the plane landed safely.

Experts say about 500,000 to 700,000 shoulder-fired missile weapons have been produced worldwide, and some have been purchased in Middle Eastern and Central Asian arms markets for as little as $5,000.

Since 2003, Congress has pressured DHS to adapt military anti-MANPADS technology to commercial aviation.

BAE Systems, which is based in Farnborough, England, works together with American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Services, which provided the test aircraft and engineering services for the development of JetEye.

DHS awarded BAE Systems a $29 million contract in January for this final evaluation phase of the Counter-MANPADS program, which calls for the planes to log about 7,000 flight hours.

Northrop Grumman -- a defense company with its own system to protect planes from portable missiles -- urged the Defense Department in March to install its system on commercial flights that take soldiers and equipment to war zones.

Jack Pledger, a Northrop Grumman executive, said in March that 27 terrorist groups are believed to possess shoulder-fired weapons, that aircraft are vulnerable to the missiles within 25 miles of airports, and that one missile incident could have catastrophic effects on the U.S. economy.

In March, the Northrop system concluded a 14-month test during which anti-missile systems were installed on 11 FedEx cargo planes that flew 4,500 flights.

Was the system tested with real missles fired at it?

Did you actually READ the article? If you had, you wouldn't have asked that question.

Until someone actually fires a missle with a "live" warhead at this system, all these tests are a joke.
It is one thing to simulate something. It's a whole different ball game when the danger is real.

<_< ----- About 20 years too late! TWA Flt.800 could have used it. Things may have turned out different if they had!!! You don't think, maybe, the development of this system had anything to do with it do you? -----No!!!!!

More like the DHL Airbus hit over Baghdad by a missile as a reason, not the Flight 800 fuel tank explosion...
After all, Bill Clinton was president when TWA flight 800 went down, and no way would a democrat, especially Saint William Jefferson Clinton would ever allow a government cover up.

Just because it was TWA, there's no way an accident could happen....

PAN AM over Lockerbie was a result of a terrorist act and there was no cover up.. I didn't hear the TWA conspiracy theorists suggest the AA 587 was an act of terrorism. Or the Swiss Air crash...or any crash NOT involving TWA...

Keep believing it was a missile, either a US or a terrorist one...

MCI, do me a favor....if you have gas in your home....turn the gas on with no flame for a couple of hours,....then go light a match.....let me know how it goes...

Lets see. Aside from Iraq a few years ago, when was the last time there was a missile shot at civilian aircrft? Specifically on AA's route system?
Just another waste of money and another way to keep the sheep scared. More slight of hand to keep the sheep distracted.
Booh...Osama is going to get you!
Never mind that the real terrorists are devaluing your dollar and looting the wealth of the nation.

"When was the last time there was a missile shot at civilian aircraft?" How about that Israeli passenger jet that took off out of Kenya a few years ago. I am by no means a Bush supporter (in fact, I have always despised him and his associates and have always been against the Iraq war but support the Afganistan war 100%) but the fact is radical Islamists have always hated the West; including the USA simply because were "infidels". Before Afganistan and Iraq, 9/11 happened then there was the first attack on the WTC, the attacks on the two embassies in Africa, the Iran hostage ordeal, the Pan Am Lockerbie bombing with many other US airliners hijacked and bombed in the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, radical Islam first attacked the US as soon as it was born in 1783 when they attacked our merchant ships in the mediteranean sea. Our ambassadors at the time (John Adams and Thomas Jefferson) asked the Muslim ambassador why were our ships being attacked when the US had done absolutely nothing to them. The muslim ambassador's answer was that their religion gave them the right to conduct piracy on the high seas which included the beheading and slitting the throats of sailors, or enslaving them, or holding them for ransom. That is the history people like you refuse to see. Thank God Jefferson sent in the U.S. marines and Navy to put an end to that crap.(Research the "barbary wars") Oh, and by the way, at that time the US was NOT a superpower, cars that run on petroleum had not been invented yet (no need for oil), and the state of Israel did not exist.

When it comes to keeping people scared Bush and Co. can't hold a candle to your idols Fidel Castro and Che Gueverra. As far as the devaluation of currency goes, how does the U.S. dollar stack up compared to the Cuban Peso? Wasn't Che Guevarra in charge of Cuba's national bank when it went bankrupt?

With all it's faults, I would rather live life in the U.S. than live in "The Islamic Republic of (fill in the blank), or Castro's communist Cuba?

Well you gotta admit my post was a lot different from El Che!

Evidently, this system is to guard against what didn't happen to TWU Flight 800.

Did anyone ever figure out who was on that aircraft? Anyone that important wouldn't be using a real name anyway so the pax list is useless (never was available, though), but ...

Just curious.

Colossal waste of money, especially considering the lack of threat. Besides, I can go down to In-N-Out at LAX, enjoy a double double, pull a Stinger or RPG out of my trunk and hit a plane from a couple hundred feet directly below. They're so close it would be difficult to miss. And I'm so close the system would be useless.

Just another act in the "feel good" security theater.

I agree that the missile defense system was not designed because of TWA 800, but that does mean it still wasn't terrorism.

Lockerbie was not investigated solely by the FBI and NTSB within US boundaries, so lack of a cover up on that case is a mute point relative to TWA 800 and AA 587.

AA 587 could have been terrorism, just like TWA 800. Both fit the airplane bombing blueprint developed by Ramzi Yousef, who actually implented it himself on Philippines Flight 434 before he was captured.

The US Government and investigative agencies have motive to cover up terrorism as a cause to both those aviation disasters.

Just look at 9/11, after the first plane hit, the media was filled with TV pundits talking about possible accident scenarios and explanations, despite the impact being dead center of the tower on a clear day, until the second plane hit. If 9/11 only had one plane used as a missile, would it have been buried under the guise of some sort of erroneous pilot error and/or plane malfunction, or would the US Government openly admit to such a horrendous national security failure?

Re: Flight 800 - didn't the passenger list go under deep wraps (deeper than usual) after the aircraft went in the drink?
