The bookings may be up from last year, but as you point out, it is happening while airfares and YIELDS are going down down down....more so than last year.

Is this good news if the strategy is to "lose a dollar on each passenger but make up for it in volume"?

Northwest Responds to Media Inquiries Concerning Reported Delta Fare Initiative


EAGAN, Minn., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In response to numerous
requests from the news media for comments on the reported Delta Air Lines fare
initiative, Northwest released the following statement today:

"Although any analysis of the effects of the reported Delta fare
initiative depends upon the details of Delta's proposal, if it occurs,
Northwest believes that 'fare simplifications' of the sort being described are
revenue negative. Northwest expects that such an initiative, if it becomes
general, would immediately adversely and significantly affect industry
revenues."

Delta plan shakes up industry

How about this quote:

Delta's move could pummel US Airways (UAIRQ:OTC BB - commentary - research), which is struggling to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. "One possible outcome of Delta's more aggressive fare structure could be the demise of US Airways, which overlaps with approximately 60% of Delta's domestic revenue," wrote Merrill Lynch's Linenberg. "If that were to occur, it would be a positive for the industry."
