The Frederick Municipal Airport is poised to play a major part in the city’s economic growth, but that may not be welcome news to those who fly for recreation.

Mayor W. Jeff Holtzinger ® called the airport ‘‘a real gem for the City of Frederick,â€￾ that presents a ‘‘great economic development opportunity.â€￾

Plans to expand the airport are geared toward accommodating larger corporate aircraft that need a longer runway, wider taxiway, an air traffic control tower, and fewer landing obstructions to ensure more precise approaches and take-offs. While those changes are not in direct conflict with recreational aviation, they do pose problems for some pilots who are not familiar with communicating with an air traffic controller or who do not have radios in their planes.
