Above my pay grade but why put an 777 ER on this route, wouldn't it be better utilized on a longer route?

Are all the 777s Extened Range models?

For those that might be into it, the May 2013 issue of Airways has a write up on AA's first -300 trip...

The May issue is already out? You sure you didn't mean March? I'll have to walk down to Barnes & Noble and read.

yes, all of AA's 777s are ERs.
AA's average stage length for its 777 fleet (200 and 300s) as of this summer is 5337 miles which is just above the US carrier (AA, DL, UA) fleet average for 777s at 5517 miles. AA's average 777 stage length is comparable to UAs who has alot of 777 flights (at least for this summer) from EWR and IAD to western Europe. DL's average stage length is over 6500 miles. These stats exclude domestic flights, including Hawaii.

Here are the ten longest 777 flights by US operators.

DL ATL JNB 8,433 UA EWR HKG 8,060 UA EWR BOM 7,806 UA ORD HKG 7,787 DL ATL DXB 7,598 DL LAX SYD 7,487 UA EWR PVG 7,384 UA EWR DEL 7,323 DL DTW PVG 7,137 UA IAD DXB 7,069

Nope, May 2013. Issue #207. To be displayed until April 30th. Lol.

Not for nothing, I've never liked how far "ahead" magazines were printed. Some are worse than others, but it seems to be getting worse overall.

I may be wrong, but my guess is that AA is measuring how much better the new business class seats sell on various routes this year. The 77W's first route was DFW-GRU, and now JFK-LHR. The new AA 77Ws have an updated version of the Envory Suite (and same as the CX long-haul J seat) which is AA's best business class offering ever.

AA's stated plan is to take delivery of 16 total 77Ws by 12/2014 and then two more in each of 2015 and 2016 (for 20 total by end of 2016). Additionally, AA will begin removing First Class from the 47 existing 772s and replacing the F and J cabins with "up to 45" new, even more-improved versions of the 77W J/Envoy Suites. That conversion will probably take a couple of years, so by year-end 2016, new AA should have 67 777s with lie-flat J seats (20 77Ws plus 47 772s). About half of the 58 existing 763s are expected to get a 767-sized version of the seat (also in 1-2-1 config) beginning in 2014. The other half of the 763s are expected to be retired (replaced, of course, by 787s).

If AA sticks to the earlier announced decisions, then its fleet of 3-class F/J/Y 777s will decrease from the current 47 to just 20 by the end of 2016 or so. Currently, all flights to Asia, most flights to London and most flights to Deep South America are flown by 772s (with a smattering of 763s on the thinner routes). Dunno which routes will see the F-equipped 77Ws and which will be relegated to 2-class.

20 aircraft don't go real far on flights to Asia and S. America which require close to 2 aircraft for each flight. NRT/GRU/LHR are likely to be the cities that keep F service based on performance on AA's network as of today.

Just a thought, but with BA offering a fourth cabin (premium economy) on their 773, it could be a harmonization for the JV, and a move towards AA actually selling premium economy vs. just giving it away.
