Crowds flock to D.C.'s first Krispy Kreme

LAUREN FRAYER

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Becky Shell grew up in the South, where Krispy Kreme is an institution.

So the worker with the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based company said she was amazed by the fanatical reaction to the chain's deep-fried, glazed doughnuts each time a new shop opened across the country.

I don't know about Krispy Kreme - sounds kind of Piedmont-y to me.

The official junk food of US Airways should be Mrs. Smith's Pies, started in Pottstown, PA, practically a Philly suburb.

I could be talked into supporting that - if it's the deep-dish apple (ala mode, of course).

Can you believe that I actually don't like Krispy Kreme Donuts? And I'm suspicious of those that do. Are they really aliens from another planet, you know pod people?

Followup article in the Wash Post today said people were camped out on the street waiting for the grand opening - which wasn't too grand. There was some problem with the occupancy permit, which meant the KK store opened late. The doughnuts were trucked in from another store; the DC one apparently doesn't do it's own baking; and the doughnuts were cold.

My recollection of cold Krispy Kremes is that you could add them to cement to strengthen the mix.

First the management tells us to stop fighting; now the topic police have banished this thread to who-knows-where. Sigh ...
