On another site (that I could'nt get to upload), the article was very similiar. In the comments section of that article, some NIT WIT cast a disparaging remark about local LONGSHOREMEN (probably from the port of houston or galveston tx.), calling them Lazy and Overpaid.

HEY, wait a minute (eolesen)
I just thought of something.
The Longshoremen that the  ' NIT WIT ' was referring to, were NOT.......I L W U members, but those of the   I L A !

What ' Gives ' on that Eric ?

What skill set is required to be a longshore worker?

The Massive Crane (operators) perched hundreds of feet in the air, discharging and onloading hundreds of 40' containers very rapidly with pin point accuracy and extreme saftey for the many people below on the pier, and many times a high wind,..........  for starters.

The 'lashers' that are like tight-rope walkers as they secure the top row layers to the immediate bottom row, all the while dealing with an ice covered ship !

'Tree, check out any youtube video of a container crane operator.

How about what skill set is required to hit the post key once when starting a thread?
lmao, that's hilarious there

I don't doubt that they have a skill set, I just don't use it for spank bank material anytime their union does something.
If the government gelded them like the airline unions they wouldn't be doing jackchit either.

VERY GOOD...'cit RAT, that is.....IF the Feds could control them. (which they could during a huge national EMERGENCY ala the National Guard)
BUT,
Since they  I L W U is Sooooooooooo F'n Strong, via SOLOIDARITY (unlike the east coast version ILA  aka as the TWU), there is  JACK SHIIIT the Feds can do.
For example, The FEDS can order them off of a strike, BUT here's the RUB,...................the PMA (pacific maritime assoc.), thats the LAST F'n thing They want,...............because of 'Working-to-rule' (think safety), unfortunate accidents (say a loaded 40' ft. container that breaks loose from the crane and drops 300' below to the pier where a dozen or so other workers are waiting to load/secure it to a carrier so it can be driven away, OR god forbid, that same container is lifted up from the deep bowels of the most lower hold, only to break away and fall 300+ ft' back down to where it originated from, only to have it cause severe damage to the 'channels that are in place to secure the containers, while the freighter is encountering massive heavy seas, while enroute from china to Long Beach Ca.

Trust me, the PMA does NOT want Angry longshoremen FORCED back to work while on a legal Strike.
This is why the PMA...............Locks them OUT, off the property, to protect thier facilities, and the ships of the members they represnt.
Now on to an even larger problem. Berth availability.
There is nothing sweeter, than to see the waters near the harbors of Long Beach and Los Angeles....infested with freighters anchored waiting frantically for an available berth position, so they can get those highly PERISHABLE food products unloaded  !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll try this AGAIN,...with SOME of my fellow regular ('cooler) members, and MAYBE this time it will STICK.  Maybe.
And that is,..............in this (rare) situation, the FEDS and west coast management (the PMA) are NOT DEALING WITH THE  T W U in this situation.

Citrat.  You ARE  ????? aware that the Feds at the very high level, NEGOTIATED with Lucky Lucchiano to ensure.... L A B O R....P E A C E  on the NY docks during the outbreak of WW2, are you not  ????????

Now WHY would they negotiate with a man they HATED   ???
(we're WAITING for you answers) !

The  I L W U, though NOT controlled by organized crime (Like the east coast was), and UNBRIBABLE then And NOW, have a 'HAMMER-LOCK' on the West Coast docks........................PERIOD   !!!!!!!!!!!

Obama would have to station national guard troops every 5 FEET on the pier, on the ship, and definitely in the control house of the crane operator.  And THAT will Never Happen with  B O,..........or  'HILL   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

S o o r r r y y y !

Crane operator yes. They have a skill set. Someone who ties off containers. Sorry but that is unskilled labor. Watch "Deadliest Catch". I'm guessing it's not any more dangerous.

Point being that unskilled labor can be seen as over paid for their labor. The person on the assembly line putting wheels on a truck does not deserve $20+ an hr. At least that is the argument.

Everyone other than me (or you) is overpaid. Tired old argument. Let it go.

Not quite that simple the way I see it.  Historic union accomplishments aside (5 day work week, 8 hr day .. etc) it seems to me that a lot of folks who have unions need to have them because their profession can be replaced by lower wage earners without too much difficulty.  I think in a lot of circumstances the peoples skill set are such that there is no extensive training required.  assembly line workers, delivery folks .. etc  They need the union to protect their job because without the protections that a union grants them, their would be making less or replaced with someone who will work for less.

Was I over paid at American?  Quite possibly so, but I had no union protecting my wage or job and counterparts at other airlines were making about the same.  Same goes for my current job but all my co-workers are paid the same as me even out side of my department.  My company pays well above average for the industry which is why the company ha a very low turn over.  If people believe they are worth what they are paid they should be willing to give up their protection.  In this case, I'm betting the long shore workers would not be willing to do so because most of them are non-skilled labor and can be replaced at the drop of a hat.  To hold a company hostage for even higher wages to me is unconscionable.

So, essentially, you're saying the threats of industrial sabotage by the union and causing property damage should be enough of a deterrent?

How much of what comes in by boat is perishables? I thought it was mostly manufactured goods.

Last time I checked, the National Guard reported to the Governor of the respective states... Doesn't matter who is in the White House -- if the Gov of WA, CA, or OR decides to send out troops, POTUS really can't stop it. Nor could POTUS deploy Armed Forces if the Governor doesn't request assistance (remember Katrina?...).

Pennsylvania just put away a few trade unionists who destroyed equipment. The tide is turning anymore towards these types actions.

Governors of California - Oregon - Washington.

Hmm, they're ALL Dems.  But to be fair eric, having those states be Democratic STRONHOLDS, has benefited the I L W U, something that I or they...don't see changing ANYTIME soon.

Additionally,...YOU being a 'Bean Counter' Extraordinare  (SP?), I thought we'd ALL benefit from You're 'take' on all the Republican Union members ('republican union members'....What a F'n  JOKE) who are ALLEGED to be ready to STRIKE the refineries in TEX - ASSS .

(Strictly from an historical perspective) I would have loved your (often sought after ' ANALYSIS ' ) of the highest level of the U S GOV's NEGOTIATION....with one......Mr. Charles LUCCHINO over the issue of LABOR PEACE on the NYC Waterfront during the start-up of WW2 !

Isn't History Great Eric  ?????
