Attention all US Airways Pilots With Capped Retirement From PBGC

Before you spew stupid any further, I am employed by local government...I am not paid by tax dollars, I am paid by user fees generated by our tenants, NOT YOU!!!! And what the F does public sector have to do with some high paid CEO running your airline into the ground??
No, it is your local taxpayers and beyond that pay your salary and ensure your pension. What they don't say is that in some cases you have to do a job that a pilot would not do in their own home, let alone in a public setting.

But government is complex, and I too am local government, and since I work at an airport there is more tape than you realize

makes for good reading..

Can one of you SR. US Airways Pilots tell me why your pension was capped by the PBGC at $37,500 per year when US Airways went broke ...

USA1,

There are actually 2 classes of beneficieries when dealing with the PBGC (actually more than 2 but that's enough to make the distinction for this discussion). One group gets their normal pension benefit calculated amount (with penalties for early retirement, etc) as long as there is enough money in the pension plan to pay that much. The other group, because of the $ value of pilot pensions, gets the guaranteed maximum PBGC payment which is quite a bit less than their pension would have been.

There have been some changes since I retired. For one, a pilot doesn't have to terminate employment (retire) to receive a PBGC payment as was the case when I retired.

That's interesting. How come other groups at US have to retire to start theirs.

As for the rest of you ... USAir went broke, now the USA is about to default. I don't understand why you expect folks like BoeingBoy to get stuck with a 70% reduction in his and you think the public sector should carry on their merry way? What don't you understand about broke, not funded?

What dont you understand?

The default is the ability not to borrow anymore.

And keep voting in the right wing and this is what you will get.

Your post usally make sense. But on this one you are either clueless, faking dumb or haven't been paying attention to the news. I wish the government would have printed some more money for US Air while we were in BK. I guess that only works for public sector folks.

They dont print extra money for public sector, and if that was the case the State and Local gov'ts are counterfeiters.

Why are so anti public sector? I hope you don't need the fire department to assist you someday, or a police officer to arrest the thug that broke in to your house...As I stated before, I am not payed by the tax payer, we are an enterprise fund that generates our own income, that income that we generate pays part of my benefits and part of my pension, the other part I pay....I do not have a negotiated pay raise, it is merit based, and yes there have been times that I have not got a raise due to economic conditions, so don't cry in your Wheaties because your management team has failed you.

Can’t an agent get their PBGC payment at the original plan retirement age (65) and still be employed?

Who and how changed the PBGC pay out?

Sorry pal.....I think people are on to the PUBLIC SECTOR good deal..........911 was a true tragedy beyond words
BUT when was the last time you heard of a firefighter dying..........the risk IS NOWHERE what it used to be.
Retire at 45 with a 80K pension..........happening every hour of every day somewhere in America.
Who do you think is paying that money??? If they worked until 60-65 like everon else fine............
did you know that 75-80% of all retirees at the NYPD are also drawing disability.......SAME as the Long Island RR.

Historical Overview
Each year in the United States and its protectorates, approximately 100 firefighters are killed while on duty and tens of thousands are injured. Although the number of firefighter fatalities has steadily decreased over the past 20 years, the incidence of firefighter fatalities per 100,000 incidents has actually risen. Despite a downward dip in the early 1990's, the level of firefighter fatalities is back up to the same levels experienced in the 1980's.

How come firefighters make 5 times what a Marine makes? About 5,000 of them have been killed recently. Marines earn their pay ..... and it's a realistic amount. No firefighter should make or retire with benefits greater than a Marine. All IM saying is, if the country is broke and needs to cut "private sector" SS and Medicare benefits, public sector inflated pensions must be dealt with first, the same way BoeingBoy and mine were. Broke is broke, whether it's the Treasury dept or an airline.
