Brazilian newspaper Gazeta Mercantil is reporting AA may reverse their decission to suspend service to Belo Horizonte. The local state government is offering up to US$1M in subsidies and lowered airport fees for American to remain. They currently offer daily 777-200ER service to Sao Paulo, connecting to their Dallas, Miami, and New York City flights. The flight has traditionally relied on cargo to remain profitable (hence, it uses a 777), but cargo has dropped off significantly as of late, which is why the destination is being suspended. Another reason is that AA is unable to serve the city non-stop from Miami becuase of the strict and ancient US-Brazil treaty. We'll have to see what happens...we should know by early September.

Good news.

Cargo revenue overall is way up this year; wonder why cargo volume is down significantly on this flight? Any ideas? Someone else flying it or are the increased prices (due to fuel) causing shippers to think twice about air?

IMO, fuel prices play a big part of this. They are operating a heavy, cargo-loaded 777 on a very short hop. The flight, takeoff to landing, is less than an hour, and most fuel is burned during takeoff and landing.

Well this is some good news. Its a nice city. Too bad it cannot support a 767 nonstop. Even if the goverment allowed it.

Good news indeed. I have the Gazeta article which also mentions that even INFRAERO thinks that changes must be made.

I hope this goes through and it would be even better if we see a MIA-CNF nonstop.
But what are the chances of that happening?

Belo is my hometown!
