Didn't realize what how busy things can get at LAX for QF

Ok, within an 80 minute time window (10:30PM - 11:50PM): 5 departures, which include 1 A380 and 4 747-400's. Is the demand really that high???

SYD Sydney QF 12 A380
Qantas Airways 10:30 PM 10:46 PM

MEL Melbourne QF 94 744
Qantas Airways 11:05 PM 11:36 PM

AKL Auckland QF 26 744
Qantas Airways 11:30 PM 11:55 PM

SYD Sydney QF 108 744
Qantas Airways 11:50 PM 12:09 AM

BNE Brisbane QF 16 744
Qantas Airways 11:50 PM 12:13 AM

How many seats is that? How long are the check in queues?

Yes, there is that much demand. Looking at Expedia.com, four airlines have daily 5 nonstops just to SYD--Qantas(2), Delta, Virgin Australia, and United. And, judging from the fact that the cheapest coach fare I found for a 21DEC departure is over $2000 r-t for nonstop service each way, it doesn't appear that anyone is having to discount.

The cheapest one-way with 1 stop was less than $700, but it was on Air Pacific which I don't think I've ever heard of before.

The entry of Delta and Virgin has caused premium fares to collapse. Right now, QF is selling First Class for $4500 round trip, about 80% off full First Class fares. Requires a few weeks advance purchase, but that's cheaper than QF's full fare walkup Y fares.
