Camp Lejeune drinking water contaminated

I know this is not aviation related but I'm sure there's plenty of former jarheads reading this forum.
I received a letter from the Marines through the IRS since the Marines didn't have my address. It stated that anyone who was at Camp Lejeune between 1957 and 1987 may be affected by chemical contaminants in the Camp Lejeune drinking water supply. The Marines have known about this since 1981. It was only due to an ammendment to the 2008 National Defense Authorization Bill inserted by Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) that forced the Marines to notify any potentially affected personnel.

Fine. Just getting sick and tired of the hypocritical priorities of this nation. We have idiots riding around with ribons on their car yet our troops are drinking contaminated water both here and in Iraq. They are getting substandard medical treatment. They are not being given the proper equipment to be kept safe. And all we here is "support our troops". It's such a load of crap. When we start issuing war bonds and actually have to make a sacrifice for the war so many seem to want, then I might take it seriously. Until then, it's all a bunch of hot air as far as I am concerned.

But that might take a tax increase, and while we want to support our troops, there is no such thing as a "good" tax.

The concept of sacrifice left us in the mid 1970's We had a president who was ridiculed and labeled the worst president ever (until W came along). He was ridiculed for wearing a sweater on TV and urging American's to conserve by keeping thermostats lower. He was ridiculed for saying we should not import a drop more oil that we did that year (today we are importing twice that amount). He was ridiculed for making a "maliaise" speech. Yet - had we heeded at least SOME of his words...and made at least SOME sacrifice over the years, maybe would wouldn't be in the shape we're in today. But the Reagan era pushed any idea of sacrifice right out the window....and W's cure for everything is "shop". We don't know how to sacrifice for anything these days. And the stickers look so CUTE on some cars.
