Downrange
All those cheap, second rate weapon systems will never amount to anything.

An industry in which Chinese cloning has excelled to a disconcerting degree is the manufacture of weapon systems. China’s expanding military and growing assertiveness has been bolstered by weapons cloned from the arsenals of other countries. Bleeding edge U.S. aircraft including the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Northrop Grumman X-47B unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) have Chinese counterparts that are remarkably similar. Some of the technology used in these designs was almost certainly acquired through a vigorous Chinese cyber spying campaign.

Like the Japanese before them, but, hey, they are our allies right?

Surely one wouldn't fund a democracy western ideal spreading crusade with money borrowed from an enemy, would one?

The USS Lassen's patrol was the most significant U.S. challenge yet to the 12-nautical-mile territorial limits China claims around artificial islands it has built up in the Spratly archipelago as Beijing exercises its growing maritime power.
Washington's move followed months of deliberation by the administration of President Barack Obama and could ratchet up tension in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes and increase strains in U.S.-China relations.
A U.S. defense official said the Lassen also went within 12-mile limits of features in the disputed sea claimed by Vietnam and U.S. treaty ally, the Philippines. They said such "freedom-of-navigation" patrols were expected to become more frequent.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Pardon there is no sarcasm emoticon

W thought it was a swell idea to kowtow to them so that he could finance his NeoCon Exportation of American Democracy and Western Values to people who despise them and us.

At least Barry is willing to work with other nations in the region (Gasp!!! ) and use US forces, in this case the Navy, as they were intended to be used. In this case keeping sea lanes open, deterring encroachment on our allies' territory, exerting our rights to navigation, etc.

You know, the legitimate use of power, vice W's "crusading" and "converting the heathens" version.

Here's the problem the Chinese have.  Their most recent combat experience was the 1979 invasion of Vietnam.  Which they did not do so well.  They have a bloated officer corps whose criteria for advancement seems to be based more on politics than merit.  While they are updating their gear most of it is still outdated.

The true ability to project power lies with a countries navy.  In this category the Chinese are woefully lacking.  Most  of theirs is geared towards coastal defense.  Their nuclear sub fleet has been compared to the noise levels 70-80 era Soviet submarines.  They have one aircraft carrier whose aircraft cannot carry a full load out of weapons due to method of launching them.  More importantly the Chinese Navy does not have a the world wide network of bases to support an ocean going navy like we do.

Looks an awful like the 717.  I'm going to venture to say the the tooling MD sold them back in the 1990's to build MD-80/90 is being used to build this airplane.
