Did anybody read this edition of copa. Just wondering if this is the norm to send students solo and log it as such, with the instructor sitting next to you.

Yes I read the article, and I am not suprised! This is the same company that advertises a 0 incident accident rate, and I know of at least 2 write offs in London (training)and 1 last month in Northern Ont (slinging) just in the last year! As for the solo article, this SOP for them. Has a student from smashional ever got a job or just been milked. The latter I'll bet.

Wasn't there an artical about similar practices in Helicopter magazine a year or so ago?. I can't say if it was the same company, they never published the companies name, but if I recall correctly Transport took a look at one guys log book and decided that his solo -(with an instructor riding along but not acting as an instructor) didnt really count as solo time and he had to do it all over again.

I havn't seen the COPA artical in question, don't know what it says about the practice, but it seems to me if a school trains you to go solo, but doesnt trust you enough in it's machine to let you go out on your own, then maybe its time to question your teachers....

Yes, it was the same company. It was the tribunal that was published in copa calling the cfi evasive and conflicting in his answers, along with the ops manager(DM). This is the same company that runs the peel and york police departments helis saying that they have never had an accindent and that they are not part of the MAFIA. I"ll bet Kyle removes this post asap!

Slapshot, you forgot one....what they did to York Police's EC120 after having it less than a week.

Please don't tell me they bent that beautiful machine....

Thats right, I heard thet bent the stinger big time with a euro rep and a mech on board doing practice autos. I guess they only consider it an inccedent if someone is killed!

Had a couple of ex students of smashoinal PM me this week and tell me that they to have also gone on supervised solo's. When I send a student solo it is with my blessing and confidence. Just my half a millions worth

i agree with slapshot...........

the solo time is not only to learn but to build the students' confidence as well....

if one isn't comfortable to send them solo then maybe they are not cut out for this line of work..................

it's very hard to sit down and tell that to a student but it's the fair thing for the student in the long run...........

not lead them down the garden path.............................
