Flight lesson learned the hard way
Sat, May 15, 2004 10:15 AM CST

A pilot and his student escaped with their lives after their
plane crashed late Friday afternoon.

The plane went down near the airbase south of Moose Jaw. The
pilot and student ejected safely. Both occupants were taken to
hospital with minor injuries.

The plane was a CT 155 Hawk Jet valued at 25-million dollars. It
is used in the NATO Flight Training program at Moose Jaw.

The Wing Commander says the Hawk has not had problems until now.

Alain Boyer,Commander, 15 Wing Moose Jaw: "We want to secure the
site, making sure we secure all the parts that we can find
because something happened to the aircraft. We may have lost
parts when the aircraft was coming down. So they are doing what
we call a search area to make sure we locate all the parts from
the aircraft."

It appear that it could be a bird strike during a touch and go. Someone has seen a bird being ingested in the turbine and the pilots could not restart the engine.

Obviously the fault of the aircraft if it was a bird strike 😉 I can see that on tonight's National by one of their genuises

Hit a sh*thawk pulling up for a closed pattern and engine failed on downwind, no re-light (obviously). Tower was slightly confused by the call prior to ejecting - thought he was breaking out to north vs ejecting north. Both pilots ejected successfully. Student was a Brit and was back home Friday night at TGIF, IP is still in YXE hospital for a broken pelvis and femur. Ejected at approx 800' AGL.

Do you have any idea what caused the IPs injuries? Was it the ejection or his landing on the ground? Too bad about the injuries

Sounds like it was just a harder impact with the ground. I don't know how the seats are sequenced, if they are in the Hawk, but it also sounds as if the IP got out second and at low altitude it's usually the last man out that suffers more on impact with the prairie.
