Cwa Vote Counting

Votes will be tallied today at noon on a new proposed contract for the union representing US Airways' ticket agents. The Communications Workers of America says it expects to announce results on the balloting of its 5,600 members this afternoon. The contract, which would save the airline about $150 million a year, calls for pay cuts of about 15 percent for the typical worker. It allows the company to close one of its two call centers, in Pittsburgh and Winston-Salem, and offers a buyout of up to $20,000.

The CWA is one of three major unions to reach a cost-cutting deal with the company. Pilots ratified an agreement in October and flight attendants are voting on a deal struck last week. The union representing mechanics and baggage handlers has not reached an agreement.

Without ratified agreements by Jan. 6, the unions could have their existing contracts nullified by a bankruptcy judge.
