US military ban on gays ends

After years of court battles and political debate, the US military formally ended its ban on openly gay troops on Tuesday with little fanfare.

The historic change would enter into force one minute after midnight (0401 GMT) Tuesday, Pentagon press secretary George Little told reporters.

"We are prepared for repeal. It will occur at 12:01 tomorrow," Little said.

I have never seen any research to support the notion that 10% of the population is homosexual. It appears to be a way for activists to push their agenda.

The only research I've seen was with rats and over population. When rats were placed in an environment that led to overcrowding approximately 10% turned homosexual. This refutes the notion of being born "This Way" so I thinking you don't see that report much these days. It would be about 30 years old now.

If's like the assumption that Hitler killed 6 million Jews. The number comes from a line in a report that states, MILLIONS were slaughtered with as many as 6 million being Jews. Keep in mind that 6 million was a big chunk off a far bigger iceberg. Truth is that in both cases we will never really know the actual number. We can estimate, but no one knows for sure.

As for DADT my only concern is/was does having gay soldiers negatively impact a unit and their ability to carry out their mission? I can see where it could, however I haven't seen any evidence that it has. We're an all volunteer force now, if there was conscription, then I'd be way more concerned and possibly opposed to gays in the military. With conscripts you're not attracting the best of the best, you're drafting cannon fodder.

It was used as an example to illustrate that as a society we have no way of knowing what percentage of the populace is actually gay. NO ONE can accurately estimate the number of people murdered at the hands of atheists like Hitler and Stalin. Where I stand is on the side of Freedom and Liberty. Leave the selective editing to those who frankly are better at it than you.

I was never really a fan of DADT because it was the cowards way out. A cheap compromise that had more to do with politics than Military readiness. Honestly for me when it comes to the military I want one thing from them and that's to accomplish their mission whatever it may be. If the fighting force is the lean mean killing machine required I don't care it it's100% gay.

As a nation we wrestled with integration of the military, women and now gays. So far we've been successful in doing so. I know it's taken to long for some, but with the military I'm OK with going slower than we probably should. But in this case I think we got it right.

It was not a problem then and there is no reason to think anything will change because the rules of conduct have not changed. The only thing that has changed is that members of the armed forces no longer need to lie about who they are.

You hear the 10% gay stat all the time and frankly I find it hard to believe. For years the black population hovered around 12% of the total and gay activists want me to buy into a statistic that gays and blacks are nearly equal as a percentage of population, Well I call BS on that one.

As you said earlier there really is no way to know. Most gays will not admit it. I think the 10% number could be just as easily be false as it could be true. I think the reality is pretty close to the number personally.
