Deaf Texas couple: American Airlines apology not enough over ‘deaf and dumb’ remark

Well if it came from baggage service delivery which it seems like it did American stations outsource that to Prospect or G2, ya probably got some man or woman in their 70's using those terms from the 60's. 
 
You can clearly see that the handwriting is different on the offensive remark. Not acceptable in any way, but I'm thinking that the delivery service agent may have added that remark.
 
Isn't the definition of dumb the inability to speak?
This couple is still peeved off their luggage got messed up and are making a mountain out of a molehill.
I don't think whoever wrote the note had malicious intentions.
IMHO writting 'hearing and speach impaired' would be the same as 'deaf and dumb' - but then again English is my second language.
 
That is 100% proper use of the English Language. I read 4 stories on this today and not one poitned that out.

Anyone really think the person who wrote it meant it in the clinical sense?  Yea.  I thought so.
 
I think the couple interpreted the comment the way it was intended.  Perhaps when some of you have a disability or know someone personally who does you will have a better understanding.  Pretty sure AA does not want someone like that representing AA to the public.  I am sure that AA will offer a financial settlement to make it go away.  Not like AA needs or wants any more bad press.

You and I don't know the person who wrote the deaf & dumb remark to judge whether they meant malice or are innocent.
 
But come on, what kind of a society are we living in where you can't call people for what they really are and nowadays have to come up with new warm + fuzzy words to describe them?
 
Personally, having gone through high school in the late 80s/early 90s, if I wanted to be "hurtful" to these people can think of several really derogatory terms that could have been used instead of 'deaf & dumb' (and no I wasn't a bully, but the stuff we said and did on the playground and in the classroom would get all of us expelled in todays education system.  but I digress.)
 
No we don't. I'm willing to bet the term was not used in the clinical sense any more than people using the swastika use it to represent Troy from 1000 BCE.

Not sure what that has to do with anything. Why not just say hearing/speech impaired?

Having also gone through grade school and having been on the receiving end of hurtful ridicule I see nothing wrong with not using hateful words. Not sure why people are so afraid of a little compassion and common courtesy.

That is called political correctness. Liberals invented it. Liberals are all for free speech unless it does not fit in with their "warm fuzzy feelings" philosophy or one of their sick agendas.

Moehle and his mother (his mommy)  were not mollified by the apology. They want the offending note writer disciplined.    
 
In other words the baggage handler put boo-boo's on their feelings and they want revenge.
 
A lawsuit is soon to follow I am sure.

Suing is the American way (No pun intended). I am not a lawyer nor an English major therefore do not know if "deaf and dumb" is considered slander in a court of law. I might have chosen deaf and mute to be "politically" correct?
*OFF TOPIC ALERT : Maybe we should contribute another 14% equity to cover a possible suit?
 
You realize "Hearing Impaired" will be unacceptable in twenty years. Midget & Handicapped were perfectly legit and acceptable terms and now are not, and someday Short People and Disabled will also be ruled unacceptable. It is silly.
 
A lot of terms we used in our history. That does not mean they were acceptable.

Since when did being curious and respectful become 'politically correct' I always understood the term to Play to thing such as not giving failing grades for failing work so as to not hurt someone's feelings. Not sure when using derogatory remarks fell in that category.

Since you claim to be able to see the future, some lot numbers would be nice.
