DOT data clearly shows that DL started JFK-GEO at a time when it had little to no competition and was able to command very impressive fares.
Since there are few secrets that remain as secrets in the airline industry, another airline discovered DL's success and is attempting to duplicated.
Capacity has increased in the market and fares have come down.
DL has decided this market - which is rather unique in its system - isn't worth pursuing any longer.
The vast majority of the people who used this service were not going to be loyal to DL over another competitor; the people of Guyana or NY (where most of the traffic originates) don't care who operates the flight in all honesty. It's a ride home.
Well, talk about a major gap in DL's route network! I expect DL back in bankruptcy any day now without those millions they were earning on the Guyana-New York route.
700, before pointing out DL's failures on insignificant routes, why not wait and see who snaps up this route? My guess...nobody. One could almost make a case that DL was running the route as a charitable effort.

Yeah, but notice that DL is not listed there anymore. Let's wait and see if Caribbean (which I admit to having never heard of) keeps this full a schedule three or six months from now. DL, like WN, does not hang on to routes for the "glory." If it don't make no money, it don't get flown.
This flight was more trouble than it was worth. (landing fees/airport taxes, drug smuggling problems, etc)
Not a loss for Delta, not at all.
Opening a station for a flight just a few times a week? The a/c can be used more
profitably anywhere else.
The flight operated in the middle of the night and DL has many int'l cities that have less-than-daily service.
DL started the route because it made sense at a time and they made money. With a nonstop competitor now that by some reports receives gov't subsidies, it isn't worth trying to keep the route.
