I have tickets for my family to go to St. Lucia on 4/12 through 4/18/06. Any opinions as to whether or not we should take this trip? Thanks

I just hope you booked with a credit card.

Go ahead and take the trip. There are worse places to be stuck.

And for the people here that claim that there is no "book away" or adverse effect from practice striking and rhetoric such as billboards, etc, there you have it.

Open your eyes and see what is REALLY happening to the company. You are only trying to fool yourself to believe that the rhetoric is not impacting people's decisions to fly.

Once again...thanks for taking a bad situation and making it dire. It's anyone's guess what revenues could be if such anti-company actions weren't taking place. And to think that with those added revenues we would eventually profit and then ALL of us at DL could see pay raises or profit sharing (or at least fight for it...I'd join the fight then) in the future. But unfortunately it looks like everything is pushed back b/c we are forcing customers to make hard decisions on whether or not to fly and they are challenging their loyalty to DL.

THANK YOU.

seneca4, Wow your timing is a tough call to make and no one here has a working crystal ball to rely on. If I were in your shoes, I'd go for it IF.... you have a back-up plan. If all heck breaks loose, you may get support from another Airline but I'd call around and ask before going. I'm sure you and your family have been looking forward to this trip and are excited but apprehensive as well which is understandable. Therefore, if you are like I am, Go for it.... A Day at the Beach beats the heck out of standing around an airport. Goodluck and take plenty of Sunblock !!!! B)

12, You really surprised me with your post. Here (seneca4), is a possibly loyal Delta customer, here for the first time, asking for suggestions/help in a vacation decision for a family and you go off about "Bookaways", "Practice strikes", "Billboards" and what not. I can understand your anger and frustration, but.... Why not answer the posters question? I did and I work for the Airline that is your competitor in your own back yard. Seems to me that if you are so pro-company, that would be first and foremost to reply to the poster instead of striking back at those who disagree with you or have a different stance on the issues.
Customer Service works well when applied correctly.

I would book on another carrier. If Delta go on strike, yes, the other airlines will help out . . . but there are some catches.

First of all there are associated fees.

Secondly, the help is on a space available basis. Meaning, the airline must accomodate all their own passengers, the prioritize all of the reroutes. The load factors are in the 80% range for most airlines now, so the number of seats available is shrinking.

While no airline is completely predictible, I'd much rather stake my vacation on an airline that isn't having labor problems!

"Why not answer the poster's question", you ask?

Probably because he was trying to drive home the point that the actions of the few misguided sheeple are affecting the livlihoods of the many.

Pehaps b/c Seneca4 is in a predicament that our pax should not be in. This is an airline industry message board and people w/no affiliation with the industry do not just end up here, generally, so part of me says that it was a very valid question from somebody who probably has a decent inkling about what goes on in this industry and therefore wouldn't be shocked away by my response (that obviously wasn't to Seneca but rather to the cause of the issue that they bring up). Sure...if I were walking down A concourse and a pax asked me the same question, I wouldn't bring the politics into it. Again...this is an industry board and you don't just get thrown here b/c you booked a flight on Orbitz...you know something about the industry. Taking that into account, I presented the reasons for Seneca's dilemma...one that they shouldn't be in but that many here have denied exists.

You want me to answer Seneca? Sure, I'd say...you have tickets booked so why not go? Worst case scenario is that DL shuts down and AA is more than happy to bring you back from St. Lucia. Luckily this should all play out in the next week or two so if deciding for future flights, see how it plays out. There should definitely be a red-light or green-light after the 15th. Let's hope for the green. I'm truly sorry that you, Seneca, have had to worry about a situation that shouldn't be so public and so detrimental to you having a worry-free vacation and/or making future trip reservations. I truly hope you fly us again and enjoy the many new destinations we have added. We appreciate your dedication to Delta.

Personally, I say go for it. Delta is a good company in some trouble right now. They have good, smart employees. If in fact the pilots go on strike, what's the worst that could happen? You call your boss long-distance (now, from St. Lucia that could be pricey ) and tell him, "Sorry, boss. I'm stuck in St. Lucia. I had no idea that the Delta pilots were thinking of striking. Will be back as soon as another airline can accommodate us."

I would check to see who else flies the route and call the other carriers. I would ask questions such as what percentage of planes are full. With it being the week after Easter and spring breaks I would be prepared to guess how long you might be stuck. Unfortunately, you will not be the only pax stranded and it could take a while to get you home based on oal loads and when you are reaccomed. The fee I believe for sb should such a case ococur is 25.00 per person. It is not the oals fault as you chose to trvl with Delta(ie Delta has your money) and with the price of fuel it will be a gift to get you home. I know you have spent money on the tkts but with the extra hotel nights food etc and the not knowing when you might return home you have a tough decision to make and my sympathies.

Seneca, go for it. Delta and Alpa are apart in negotiations about 150million dollars. I work for DAL and believe that before DAL would ever shut down, the 150million would come from the other employee groups. I believe the creditors would see to that. 🙁 That being said, have a great trip and thanks for your loyalty..

This boys will shut this place down in a heatbeat, they have no other choice!!!!!!!!

luvthe9 is demonstrating the same childish temper tantrum that Lee Moak has demonstrated for his fellow pilots.

Problem is, the arbitrators publicly told DL and DALPA to shut up the rhetoric and get in and negotiate. You haven't heard from DL since but DALPA has only escalated the rhetoric.... not real smart when the arbitrators have the ability to determine in a heartbeat the future of the DL pilots.

It's also why national ALPA has told DALPA to figure out a way to come up w/ an agreement. National ALPA does not want to get blamed for shutting down an airline and the hellacious beating they will take in Washington during an election year. You can bet there are lots of voters like our Seneca and his family that will remember bing stranded (it isn't easy finding space to accommodate 300,000 passengers a day on other airlines) and take out their revenge at the polls for any politician that doesn't rip the innards out of the labor movement.

And ALPA doesn't want to incur the financial liabilities that they will have to bear if the pilots inflict damage to the company against a court order which will most certainly be issued by at least one court.

And ALPA doesn't want to be made out to be fools that cannot work with management when DL pilots were the highest paid in the industry by a very wide margin for several years after 9/11. The public can never find sympathy for that.

Lee Moak has run this whole campaign out of his personal anger for the company. But he is about to be reduced to insignificance and he is trying desperately to salvage what he can of his pathetic career.

He may be well to return to New Orleans and rebuild his fabled city. He and Mayor Ray should work well together.
