(Bloomberg) -- Everyone on Delta Air Lines Inc.s 11:30 a.m. flight from Los Angeles to the South by Southwest festival on Friday will get expedited security processing, complimentary cocktails and a chance to win first-class tickets to London and New York.

Good luck booking a seat. This is an invitation-only junket to Austin, Texas, part of Deltas bid to grab more of the entertainment industrys travel business, which the carrier estimates is worth $1 billion a year.

Delta, the worlds third-largest airline, runs what it calls its festival shuttle with help from United Talent Agency Inc., whose clients include actors Angelina Jolie and Benedict Cumberbatch. The flight to the South by Southwest music, technology and film festival is intended to show Hollywood theres a worthy alternative to American Airlines, the worlds No. 1 carrier, and No. 2 United Airlines.

The whole goal is about going after a really lucrative and very, very large and very, very unique revenue set, said Ranjan Goswami, a vice president of sales for Delta.

Delta hired United Talent to open doors in Hollywood and help decide who to invite to fly. Chris Day, a spokesman for the agency, said the shuttles have showcased the airline and created a valuable halo effect.

Can't fault DL for trying, but the 739 was not an impressive choice to showcase the premium DL experience.

and yet apparently the clients didn't ask for AA's 321T or DL's sports charter 319s that are the most premium aircraft in any US carrier commercial fleet.

perhaps DL is cracking this last vestige of the rich and famous in LA that have been supposedly loyal to AA.

From the article:
"The flight to the South by Southwest music, technology and film festival is intended to show Hollywood theres a worthy alternative to American Airlines, the worlds No. 1 carrier, and No. 2 United Airlines."

Does that mean that DL, being #3, is trying to find it's niche (before it becomes extinct, as some posters theorize is the ultimate result of a #3 carrier)?

well they clearly didn't want to pay for it... they could have anything they want for enough money... that is the way the free enterprise system works

DL is the 2nd largest airline in the US.

DL is the largest airline in LAX based on local passengers and revenue to Latin America and Asia.

Texas clearly is a growth area for DL.

That the funniest thing on this site.

Tell us, do you actually believe this or do you like to just throw out the erroneous "some posters theorize" bs ?

Some posters have convinced themselves that this theory is Gospel.
I'm just trying to ascertain whether they also may have double standards.

Guess what? Companies don't exist to carry passengers. They exist to make money which is far more closely related to revenue than passenger counts.

And it also doesn't change that DL is the fastest growing of the big 4 at LAX and is focusing on the entertainment industry and Texas, markets that have been Aa's domain

of course it's funny for someone who doesn't want to admit that DL is making significant inroads at LAX. given that we have heard for years that AA is THE airline for the stars, DL apparently is not much interested in respecting to the industry status quo.

and if DL thought one of the premium configured 319s would make the difference, they would have done so.

Good for Delta.  They threw a 739 onto LAX-AUS amidst their usual EMB175s.  Meanwhile, AA continues to hold a stronger market position at LAX, and a far stronger market position at AUS.  Meanwhile, while Delta is sending one 737 on LAX-AUS occasionally during big events when it's trying to impress other people whose industry business AA already dominates, AA offers not one but soon four daily mainline flights in this market (plus an EMB175).

and UA is likely to be the carrier that is most hurt by the increase in servce from Texas to LAX.

nobody has doubted that AA is the dominant carrier from Texas to the west. but DL clearly isn't bound by the status quo and intends to grow.

I still think that there is a possibility we will see DL's LAX to DFW service upgraded to mainline before the summer.
