Disgusting

Disgusted that Abdel Basset Ali-al-Megrahi is about to be set free on "humanitarian grounds". How much humanitarian concern did he have for 270 innocent people 20 years ago. Please let your voices be heard to the British embassy:

Here's an idea. Remember the "Achille Lauro" hijacking back in the '80's?

The hijacker had been released by the Egyptian government and were being flown to a safe haven. The US military intercepted the aircraft carrying them and escorted it to a US base in Italy. After a diplomatic row between the US and Italy, the hijackers wound up in Italian custody. Most were eventually let go. "Humanitarian" grounds no doubt.

How about the US does the same thing with the plane carrying Mr al-Megrahi back to Libya. Only this time, no handing over to the Euro-weenies. Off to Gitmo!

Initially I agreed with you. I read an article From a Ex CIA agent involved in interrogations. I do not recall the name of the terrorist but we was way up the chain of command. During the interrogation, they gave him tea and cookies. He drank the tea but did not eat the cookies. Ended up he was diabetic. The interrogator brought him some sugar free cookies. That along with a few will placed lies got him to spill his guts. He ended up telling them exactly where to find Sadam. The point of the story he said was that they (the enemy) think we are cold hearted bastards who care nothing about humanity and will destroy them in a heart beat with out remorse. The action of giving him cookies essentially took the wind out of his sail.

I am not thrilled about releasing this guy from jail bu his life is over. He has been deprived of his freedom during the time in which he was healthy. He knows his days are numbered. Releasing him may/probably will make people think twice. The US/UK are releasing a man who took part in the murder of 259 people because he has cancer and is dying. That does not jibe with the propaganda we have been told about the evil (US/UK) empires.

The lives of the 259 murdered people cannot be brought back. If his release makes one potential bomber think twice and turn around, IMO, it will have been worth it. He is a dead man soon anyway. Whether he dies in prison or not to me makes little difference at this point. His release may actually do some good.

His release may actually do some good.

Tell that to the families of the 259 innocent murdered individuals. You and Obama are a lot alike when it comes to appeasing terrorists i see. Go figure.

Go argue with the CIA then. He was the one who said it works.

What will you say to the next family who looses someone? What if they may have lived had this guy been set free? Keeping him in jail will do nothing, that is a fact. Releasing him MAY do some good or it may do nothing. We are already in situation where nothing good will happen. Releasing him can only make it better, it cannot cause more harm.

Try passing on the insults and present an argument for once in your life. Your petty insults are tiresome and irrelevant.

]The Megrahi case had become a millstone for the Scottish government as it balances a series of competing interests, among them the fact that British oil companies are trying to do more business in Libya and hope Megrahi's release might open doors.

Maybe a big reason for the release?

As I said earlier, the US should do what it did when the Achille Lauro hijackers were released by the Egyptians.

IMO it’s a bit naive to think releasing this guy is going to make any potential terrorist think twice. We dropped bombs on Serbians in order to protect Muslims in the Balkans. Did that really matter to people like Osama Bin Laden? Obviously it did not.

The reason for (release) compassion should only come at the desire from all the relatives of the victims. That being said they should insure that his last day should be strapped to a first class seat....and pushed out the door at 30K feet to his family that awaits below. Thats the same compassion he gave to all the victims.

From the reader comments on the NYT story about this topic:

"I was one of the Police Officers who attended the morning after the Lockerbie Disaster. My experiences there have blighted both my life and the lives of my family ever since. Please do not think that this is supported by everyone in our country. The decision to release a man who is in my opinion, a mass murderer was taken by a politician and not the people of Scotland. Our political system is not that different from most other countries. Politicians are voted into office. From that point onwards all of their decisions are taken out of the hands of the people they represent. No one understands more than I do the anger felt by the American people over this, but please remember, Scottish people died at Lockerbie as well and Scottish people had to pick up the pieces (literally). We are as angry as you are over this disgusting decision. For the first time in my life I am ashamed to be Scottish"
