ROMULUS, Mich. - A 23-year-old Nigerian man claiming ties to al-Qaida tried to light a powder aboard a commercial jetliner before it landed Friday in Detroit, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News. A counterterrorism official characterized the powder as an explosive device, and federal officials raised the terrorism alert for air flights to orange, or high, the second-highest level.

Just a guess here, but I think it's more likely that he is a wannabe rather than someone with any real Al-Quada connections. But maybe it's time to start re-screening transit passengers coming from places like Lagos?

What does it matter? I didn't know al-Qaida gave out official membership credentials?

Apparently they do know of this guy and his al-Quaida connections. CNN Video

Maybe this Nigerian was better off sticking to e-mail fraud instead of trying to blow up a plane.
Send him to Gitmo.

So this guy was denied a UK visa; how did he get one for the US?

THE son of a prominent Nigerian banker, who allegedly attempted to blow up a transatlantic flight over America, was barred from returning to Britain earlier this year.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, graduated from a university in London last year but his visa request was refused in May when he attempted to apply for a new course at a bogus college

Throwing him into lake Erie is too easy. The last thing I'd want is for him to achieve martyrdom, which is what would happen.

I say toss him in Marion, and make him wait a good long time for his 72 virgins.

Watching CNN this morning my mouth hit the floor when our resident Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stated that "the system worked"

When asked by CNN's Candy Crowley on "State of the Union" how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who has been charged with trying to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the jet, Napolitano responded: "We're asking the same questions." Napolitano added that there was "no suggestion that [the suspect] was improperly screened."

That ihas to be dumbest thing she could say. I would wager that not one percent of Americans think the system is “workingâ€￾ when terrorists successfully get bombs onto planes (and succeed in activating them). Probably even fewer think it’s fair that they have to take off their shoes, endure delays and madness while a known Islamic radical — turned in by his own father — can waltz onto a plane (and into the country). DHS had no role whatsoever in assuring that this bomb didn’t go off.

By her logic if the bomb had gone off, the system would have “workedâ€￾ since it has done everything right.

Why was the jet fuel to fly him to the island. Tie some cement boots on him and throw him in Lake Erie.
Lake Erie is way too clean, Rouge River might be a better place. A better message to send to those peace seekers is to be-head the guy and hang the remainder of his body off the Ambassador bridge.

Thank goodness for the separate operating certicate. The DELTA name isnt being used in the media regarding a terrorist attempt.

From the NY Times:

That meant no flags were raised when he used cash to buy a ticket to the United States and boarded a plane, checking no bags.

You have to be kidding. The system worked?

Nepolitano should have gone on there and told the world that there was a major malfunction in the system if a guy who pays cash for an international ticket, one way, and checks no bags, was not flagged. Even when his own Father has reported it to the US Embassy that he is a radical...

I guess you have not been watching the news with the picture all day of the guy in the bomb squad suit going up the aircraft stairs with the large Delta sign overhead and the aircraft in the Delta livery
