Execs reap what we sow

How do you guys like the CASM metric? The boys, and a couple of girls, directly benefit from us being so poorly paid. Nice, huh?

Well as a pilot or flight attendant you only have to fly what your line is worth. It's your option if you fly over a little or under a little. It's totally within their right. Reserve flight attendants are not required to pick up on the tradeboard nor are they required to "help out" when scheduling starts kissing rear ends to fill positions. If we have a management that wants to play hardball.....BATTER UP! ! ! ! ! ! ! 😀

If I was the union I would have made it a priority to get raises for the crews a while ago. Two years later our union hasn't even ask for money yet! lol! Management laughs at them without a doubt.

If you were in a union you might have something to say about it.

If you are a management troll you would be in character.

I heard tonight in PHX that they were getting rid of the triple play reward system.

If everyone stopped paying dues for a month we could bring this to the forefront pronto.

Instead of complaining why don't you come up with a campaign platform of what you would do different and run for office? BTW, it is contractual to pay dues or get released.

I think not picking up overtime is a job action. Link

Stop supporting the unions who don't produce! Fastest way to get results.

I love the wording used in the article: "refusing to volunteer for overtime."

I don't know if that moronic judge used those words. But what exactly does that federal judge think the word "volunteer" mean? Does AWA320 moonlight as a federal judge in Chicago?

Didn't read the link, but if that was the case against the UAL pilots....ya that judge must like the idea of indentured servitude. O/T is O/T contracturally the company guarantees us to be paid 71/72 or 76 hours repectfully. I.E. once I fulfill that hour requirement to my employer, the rest is my option... Screw them.

It wasn't the "refusal to volunteer for overtime" by individual pilots that was the problem; the problem was the union's tactics in attempting to convince the members to not volunteer for extra flying and the intimidation the union brought forth on those who did volunteer for extra flying. The injunction issued against the union and the four named officers. If individual pilots refuse exta assignments, no problem. Concerted efforts by the union to discourage individuals from accepting extra assignments is unlawful under the RLA.

In the Feb CLT f/a crew news session. Scooter is asked about his bonus and whether it's tied to keeping labor costs low. He says FALSE, you see 80% on financial, 20% on Operational......he's not completely sure, you see because he doesn't worry himself over those things.......but alas, from the 8k

On January 19, 2011, the Committee established the (1) corporate financial targets based on designated minimum levels of pre-tax income for fiscal year 2011, (2) operational targets based on (a) a peer-group comparison of on-time flight performance in 2011, (B) a peer-group comparison of customer complaints in 2011, (c) a peer group comparison of baggage handling in 2011 and (d) the Company’s 2011 cost (excluding fuel and payments under the employee profit sharing program) per available seat mile and (3) bonus pool amount, based on the extent to which the corporate financial targets and the operational targets are met, for the annual incentive program. The Committee established absolute goals for each of the operational targets for target payouts and also instituted minimum annual performance targets which must also be achieved for each given operational target to be deemed achieved. The Committee established 2011 target incentive awards as 125% of base salary for our Chief Executive Officer, 110% of base salary for our President, 100% of base salary for our Executive Vice Presidents and 80% of base salary for our Senior Vice Presidents. If the performance measures are met at the maximum level, the Committee may approve payouts at 200% of a participant’s base salary (160% for Senior Vice Presidents).

I don't know about you, but I would think that a target CASM for 2011 would fall into keeping labor costs in check...no? Now, knowing what that CASM is, would be interesting...

This should help. From this 1/27/11 article, US Airways posts USD502m profit for 2010

(Bolding mine for clarity)

Total consolidated operating expenses in the fourth quarter were up 7.3% to USD2.02 billion over the same period last year on a 22.4% increase in fuel expense. Mainline cost per available seat mile (CASM) was 12.05 cents, up 2%. Excluding fuel and special items, mainline CASM was 8.41 cents, down 1.7% versus the same period last year. Express CASM excluding fuel and special items was 13.81 cents, up 3.0% on a 4.1% increase in ASMs.

For the full-year 2010, total operating expenses were USD11.1 billion, up 7.6% versus 2009 due primarily to a 28.3% increase in fuel expense. Excluding fuel, special items and profit sharing, consolidated CASM declined 0.5% to 9.21 cents while mainline CASM declined 0.4% to 8.30 cents. Express CASM excluding fuel and special items increased 3.9% to 13.79. Express expenses reached USD703 million in the quarter, compared with USD636 in 4Q2010 maintaining its profitability. For the year, Express expenses rose to USD2.7 billion compared with USD2.5 billion in 2010.

Further, from the Guidance part of this article...

CASM for the full year for mainline will be flat compared with 2010, with both the first and second quarters being flat. The peak summer season will result in a 1-3% increase while the fourth quarter will also be flat. Express CASM will be up 5-7% primarily on the fact the maintenance honeymoon on its CRJ200s has expired which is worth about four points to Express CASM.

I would assume that the bag fees and such are not a part of these numbers, which are the only reason US is profitable. So, what else could be cut in the CASM to lower it? Won't be fuel... only thing explainable would be labor.
