By MATTHEW EISLEY, Staff Writer

An article on the front of the City & State section Sunday incorrectly stated the suspected circumstances of a crash of an N.C. National Guard AH-64 Apache helicopter into the Cape Fear River on Thursday. According to Guard officials, the crash was caused either when the copter struck power lines crossing the river or by some other failure that sent it into the lines.

BROADWAY -- They trained to fight America's enemies abroad, only to die in the cold, muddy water of the Cape Fear River.

The North Carolina National Guard identified the victims Saturday in the helicopter crash Thursday night on the Chatham-Lee county line: 1st Lt. Christopher Plummer, 31, of Cary; and Chief Warrant Officer Richard James, 44, of Lewisville, in western Forsyth County.

James served in Afghanistan, where the 1st Battalion of the National Guard's 130th Aviation Regiment, based at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, flew more than 9,000 hours over 10 months in 2003 and 2004 without losing a single soldier.

The outfit hadn't had a serious training accident in 24 years.

Morning all,

Ric was a great guy and a great officer. He worked for me when i was the Battalion commander of the 1/130th Attack helicopter battalion in RDU. he was very uncomplaining, had a positive attitude, and did everything he was asked to do.

Its really a shame he made it through a year in Afghanistan and then lost his life in a training accident back home.

There is a memorial service for Rick and the 1st Lt that died in the crash with him at the Army Aviation Support facility in RDU on Sunday 15 May at 1500 hrs.

Lets keep politics out of this. Rick was proud of his service to his country. He was one of our country's finest. Just leave it at that.

As much class as the morons who post insanity on here...look in the mirror...

Rick died for what? What was accomplished with his death besides people feeling bad and family forever burdened, for Bush's insane war? For love of country? Like Patton said, NO Man dies for his country! Morons.....

Thanks Hawk........ This just came up on the Hub Airways Today:

/Flight Attendant will be missed by many

The US Airways family extends its condolences to the
family and friends of Rick James, a Philadelphia-based
flight attendant, who died May 6 in a military
helicopter crash.

James, a 15-year flight attendant and Apache
helicopter pilot in the Army National Guard, was
piloting a training flight that crashed into the Cape
Fear River in North Carolina. The Army is
investigating the cause of the accident.

"Rick was one of those people who was liked by
everybody," said Dave Chapla, manager of Inflight
Services in Philadelphia and James' first supervisor
at US Airways. James joined the airline in 1990 in
Pittsburgh.

"He was always smiling," added Mary Green, Inflight
supervisor in Philadelphia. "Even if you told a dumb
joke, he would laugh at it. Also, he could fix
anything - he was always fixing peoples' suitcases."

A year ago, James returned from Afghanistan after a
10-month deployment with his unit, the 130th Aviation
Regiment, based in Morrisville, N.C.

After his return, James resumed working as the German-
speaking flight attendant on US Airways flights to
Germany. It was a role he had filled since the early
1990s. James learned German while stationed in Germany
with the Army, Chapla said.

The funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday, May 14,
at Nicholson Funeral Home in Statesville, N.C.
