An article on the front of the City & State section Sunday incorrectly stated the suspected circumstances of a crash of an N.C. National Guard AH-64 Apache helicopter into the Cape Fear River on Thursday. According to Guard officials, the crash was caused either when the copter struck power lines crossing the river or by some other failure that sent it into the lines.
BROADWAY -- They trained to fight America's enemies abroad, only to die in the cold, muddy water of the Cape Fear River.
The North Carolina National Guard identified the victims Saturday in the helicopter crash Thursday night on the Chatham-Lee county line: 1st Lt. Christopher Plummer, 31, of Cary; and Chief Warrant Officer Richard James, 44, of Lewisville, in western Forsyth County.
James served in Afghanistan, where the 1st Battalion of the National Guard's 130th Aviation Regiment, based at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, flew more than 9,000 hours over 10 months in 2003 and 2004 without losing a single soldier.
The outfit hadn't had a serious training accident in 24 years.
