Now while I can't top that one, how about a
blast from the past reason...
Due to payload, temperature and winds aloft,
their new "water-wagon" 707-123 couldn't
make the transcon nonstop. You should have
seen that takeoff roll from LAX!
A Metroplex fuel stop was projected, but when
they arrived in the area on approach to GSW,
they couldn't find it as it was "all plowed
into the ground." That north end of 17/35
beyond the freeway sure as heck wouldn't do.
Tried DAL, but there were literally swarms
of blue and orange jets zipping in and out,
taxiing like bats out of he##. And of course
the captain then remembered, "oops, can't land
here, it would not be the...Wright thing to do!"
(For which he was later commended by AArpey and
the entire executive suite at 4333 AAmon CAArter
Blvd., the city of Fort Worth, the Star-Telegram,
the ghost of Amon Carter...)
So it was on to STL.
