The green light is about to flash for Gary/Chicago International Airport.
Gary Mayor Scott King, U.S. Rep. Peter Visclosky and Gov. Mitch Daniels have scheduled a news conference at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the airport for a “major announcement regarding the future” of the airport.
Officials were tight-lipped this week on the specifics, but airport leaders have been awaiting approval from the Federal Aviation Administration on plans they believe could position them as the third major Chicago airport.
The airport has requested about $90 million over the next 10 years to extend runways and terminals for a predicted threefold increase in passengers by 2012.
Tony Molinaro, spokesman for the Great Lakes region of the FAA, on Thursday said the letter of intent had not yet been approved.
“They’re working on it and getting close,’’ Molinaro said. “The guy that’s working on it has it all on his desk.”
