I just saw a report on the news that the f/a's at UAL started Chaos today. Is it just informational picketing at this point or actual CHAOS?

It's a Global Action day in combination with the AFL/CIO pow-wow.

Flight Attendants plan Global Day of Action against United Airlines for Thursday - interview with AFA's Sara De La Cruz
Description:

The Association of Flight Attendants announced on Sunday at the AFL-CIO convention that they would be holding a Global Day of Action on Thursday, July 28, 2005. Jesse Russell asks CWA-AFA spokesperson Sara Nelson de la Cruz about the situation with United, the day of action and the chances for multiple unions getting together for a national airline strike.

Here's a press release by UAL that is sure to add gasoline to the fire:

Statement From United Airlines

Thursday July 28, 11:11 am ET

CHICAGO, July 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In response to actions taken today by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), United issued the following statement:
The actions the AFA leadership has threatened are illegal and will not be tolerated. United will do whatever is necessary to ensure the continued smooth operation of the company for our customers.

While every other union at United has recognized the need to terminate and replace pension plans in order for United to successfully complete its restructuring, the AFA leadership has simply refused to accept reality and negotiate a replacement plan on behalf of its members.

United attendants strike in Hong Kong:

Possibly the first signs of following through on previous strike threats, 35 United flight attendants went on strike Thursday in Hong Kong. The striking workers gave no warning before picketing at Hong Kong's Chep Lap Kwok Airport, where they chanted union slogans and handed out leaflets to customers. United says no flights were disrupted by the action, but Jack Kande, vice president of the Association of Flight Attendants, warned more random strikes are possible. "We are warning them we can go on strike any time, anywhere, any duration, and it can cause delay and cancellation to any flights," he tells AFP. Kande says the attendants are protesting last month's move by United to terminate their pension plans. "United Airlines is not willing to negotiate with us. We hope this will give some pressure to the management," Kande says. CNN reports the AFA has other threatened CHAOS strikes at several of United's international destinations. CHAOS stands for Creating Havoc Around Our System, operating on the premise that random, targeted strikes can significantly hurt the airline without resorting to a systemwide work stoppage.

A strike is when a union member refuses to report to work as a bargaining chip for some benefit, work rule, etc . . .

Picketing isn't striking, so the title of this article is misleading.

right?

Here is what happens if the AFA tries and illegal strike.

A. FA's who participated get fired with no chance of being rehired.
B. AFA leadership goes to jail.
C. AFA members get their wages garnished to repay UAL for the costs of their illegal job action. (just like the AA pilots)

How foolish is this union? The judge already told them they cannot strike.

Wow. Your knowledge of labor law is shockingly bad -- especially with regard to items B and C.

Also, a judge has not yet said "they cannot strike." (Please post a link or cite the decision where Wedoff said this.)

Finally, the AA pilots did not have wages garnished to pay for an illegal job action. Try again.

(Not that I think AFA is doing the right thing in all this. But you are just making stuff up!)

When the agreement between the PBGC and UAL went before Wedoff, he stated that it was not illegal and NOT a violation of the AFA contract. (= cannot strike). Two appeals court judges have found for UAL on this matter.

The pilots at AA were each assesed by thier union to pay back the company for their illegal job action. (sorry garnished was the wrong term).

You don't know what you are talking about.
There were no assessments to the AA pilots by APA.

I don't know, I'd consider accepting a huge concesionary contract as a defacto assesment.... <_<

Not true, and as point of fact, AA pilots did not have their wages garnished. Keep trying the "big lie" tactic.

That's correct. The union was fined, I believe, $45 million. But the fine was forgiven as part of the wage concessions to avoid bankruptcy post 9/11.
