So those who are unhealthy have parents or they them selves all have 22" on their car? How incredibly ignorant. I good number of the people I work with are over weight. Damn near everyone I work with has horrible eating habits. None of them have 22". They are getting by like the rest of us. Most have families so their cost are higher. Most people were never taught good eating habits growing up so as adults they do as they were raised. I believe junk food is nearly as addictive as most other habits. All the flavors and salts in fast food/processed foods kill your taste buds. I see the baskets of people when I shop.

Too blame obesity on 22" is beyond ignorant. To ignore the epidemic is as ignorant.

At the very least, all public schools need to have their meal programs completely overhauled. Schools should not have any sodas or sugar juices on site. Kids should not be allowed off site to go to fast food joints for meals. The meals should be set up by dieticians not bean counters. Pizza, burgers, hot dogs, tater-tots ... are not lunches. Fresh vegetables, grilled or baked meats. poultry or fish, fruit should be the fair of the day.

We can either pay a little now or we can pay a whole lot more later in terms of health care and lost productivity.

You aware these schools with 'healthy meals' for the most part the kids don't eat the veggies and other 'healthy' items, only to toss them into the trash?

Schools employ dieticians where I went.

True, kids will do that. However, what is the alternative? Pretend the problem does not exist?

Thats what many people do. The fact remains there are plenty of ways to make health foods taste good. My wife has found recipes for stuff that even my nieces like and they will turn their nose up any anything that is not a chicken nuggets, hot dog or hamburger.

So either we deal with it now or we deal with it later. Dealing with it later will be exponentially more expensive. Then again that is typically they way this country works. Why deal with it now when you can kicking down the road.

If we lived in a FREE Society the only person who would pay for their mistakes or successes would be the person who does so. People make choices good and bad everyday. I choose not to smoke or do drugs, so guess what I'm not worm food like Whitney Houston. Addiction like obesity are the only two self healing diseases that I'm aware of that are life threatening. Yet given the above I feel that drugs should be safe and legal.

Riding down the Freeway on a Harley sans helmet @ 80mph isn't to bright either, however it the rider brain that gets splattered and it's nobody's damn business. Parents who don't want to parent and allow little Billy to weigh 250lbs in the 7th grade are not the problem of government. If bad parenting were against the law half the parents would be doing life in prison. If you want a world like the below adaptation of the 23ed psalm then count me out.

The Government is my Shepherd....

The government is my shepherd:
I need not work.
It alloweth me to lie down on a good job;
It leadeth me beside still factories;
It destroyeth my initiative.
It leadeth me in a path of a parasite for politic's sake;
Yea though I walk through the valley of laziness and deficit-spending,
I will fear no evil, for the government is with me.
It prepareth an economic Utopia for me, by appropriating the earnings of my own grandchildren.
It filleth my head with false security;
My inefficiency runneth over.
Surely the government should care for me all the days of my life,
And I shall dwell in a fool’s paradise forever.

I am also reminded of one of my favorite quotes:

"When was the last time you heard someone say, 'The help here is way too slow and incompetent. Why don't they hire some civil servants?'"

And what about the children who are not legally able to make their own decisions?

We do not live in a society that turns people away and just lets them die as a policy. If you ever become sick and fall on hard times the stated policy is not t that you are to be turned out on the street and left to die. If that is how you define a free society then you can take it. I have no interest.

That's what parents are for!! To parent their offspring. Government is for protecting our Liberties, which include Little Billy eating himself into an early grave

By that standard you support child abuse. As I said. It is not the stated policy of this country to allow people to die because they cannot afford health care. It is also not the policy of this nation to abandon children who are unable to fend for them selves and who are not legally considered an adult. And this is why libertarians are just as bad as the rest of the parities. Pure anarchy does not work any better than pure socialism. Both are nice in theory but fall on their face when reality hits.

Several points

When I refer to "Government" I'm ALWAYS referring to the Federal Government.

Parents are responsible for their children. The fact they CHOOSE to abdicate those responsibilities to the Nanny state is the end result of the existence of the Nanny State.

State & Local governments are free to enact Child Protection legislation within the narrow confines of the COTUS. We see how well that works with the foster care system. A system that in NJ allowed 5 kids to literally be buried under the porch while the Foster Mom collected the money.

Maybe we should have the Obama version of the Hitler Youth? Round them up send them to "camp", teach them the "right" way to eat and exercise. True child abuse it not educating him/her due to the incompetence of the Government Schools. If little Billy can't read the Nutrition Facts on the side of the chip bag how's he going to know if they're healthy or not?

I hate Libby's canned peas.To this day.
'They' made me eat them.
I hatched a plan.
I'd slide the peas over the edge of the plate when 'they' weren't looking.
'They' played stupid....
'She' picked up my plate.
And so go the best laid plans of mice and children......

I'm sorry, I have a hard time taking you seriously when you keep using the stupid Hitler analogies.

How about schools just serve a health meal? Is that in violation of the COTUS? How about schools teach kids about diet or is that against the COTUS? Why you make a federal case out of the most benign things escapes me.

Any school on the school lunch program is required.......and in this day, for schools to serve foods that are off the scale as far as nutrition is leaving them open for a lot of BS.
Pizza isn't a terrible food, nor hot dogs when served in a balanced setting.
Schools are between getting kids to eat and complying with food nutrition guidelines.....not always a balanced issue.
Serve the most fit and healthy and they dump it in the can......duh.

Next time you go to the grocery store look at the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables. Then look at the cost of oatmeal and cream of wheat compared to fruit loops. Look at the cost of a bugger ant BK or McD's. Look how many grocery stores are in poorer neighborhoods verses wealthier ones.

Bottom line is it costs quite a bit more in terms of money and time to eat healthy. Most people are lazy and do not want to put forth the effort to cook a meal. Quite a few cannot afford to buy the groceries. Quite a few studies have shown that the poor are much more likely to be less healthy than the 'not poor' and large part of it is diet as well as lack of exercise.
Agree, but let me let you in on something. You will consume less and do more for your body by eating what is good for you. You get full quicker and have more energy when you eat right. You save a lot on Dr visits and sick days, by eating healthier. There are 'cheap' health foods, you just have to know how to find them. Fresh is great, but not always the right answer. Key phrase is 'in season' when healthy is affordable. Frozen foods are still a great alternative.

I was once lazy and didn't feel like cooking my meals, but now I have so much energy, that once you start cooking, you cook for the whole week.

Poor people, as you call them, are given FREE food resources. This makes them inclined to be lazy and consume foods that are easy to prepare.

I recently had my yearly physical, being over 50, and my doctor is worried about me. He's worried because he is 10 years younger and my numbers are better than his 😀

My best advice is that Dr. Oz is my mentor, but I don't always agree with him.

If you want my opinion as to what is really giving us an obese problem, and most problems, I'd guess sodium. Giving up or cutiing down on sugar is easy. My sweet alternative is stevia. But salt is everywhere. Even eggs in shells have sodium.

I'm guessing the sodium did the burger consumer in. But here's an interesting tidbit...I told my sodium worry to my doctor, and he told me that since I'm in good shape, salt isn't really a health factor for me. He tells me that his kids who participate in school sports can eat $25 of food at McDonalds and it goes through them. Still I cut sodium as much as possible.

I was once told by my doctor, "Bob throw out your salt shaker, you'll live longer". He went on to state that enough salt occurs naturally in our food that we should never add any. So perhaps you're correct.

Lot's and lots of empty calories out there plus salt = Health issues if not obesity then something else.

Just serve a health meal? OK, I'll bite, now should it conform to Halal, Kosher, Vegetarian or vegan standards? How about the schools educate our kids and feed them the same old slop they served us. We all lived.
