How this deal benefits DAL

...one benefit this deal could provide Delta is that if they stave off US it will be because the dig deeper, cut more, drive more efficiency, etc. That could make them the best post-bankruptcy carrier available. The threat could make them stronger.

Don't be shocked if this is a head fake and LCC ends up with NWA and DAL is left standing at the alter...I hope so anyway.
Boy I hope that scenario is IN THE CARDS. Combining US and Delta makes absolutely no sense and is like mixing oil and water........way too many obstacles to overcome and most of us on both sides of the fence DO NOT WANT IT. (On the otherhand US/NWA would compliment each other very well and the folks at NWA would appreciate a more civil CEO and Management Team that Parker has brought to the "New" USAirways.

I think a LCC/DAL merge does not preclude a subsequent new Delta/NWA combo of some sort, depending on what your theory is of the regulator's attachment to the quaint notion of legacy carrier price competition. If it really is a new world with real new entrant LCC's, then why be so worried about combos of legacies. For example:

LCC/DAL + DTW, MSP - CLT, ATL, JFK and LGA assets

UA/CO+ maybe some MEM assets

AA + NW asia assets and some CLT assets.
