If you look closer at this, it's a pretty good deal for US. Outside partners put up the money, the property is developed, retail, hotel, etc pay rent and help defray cost. US will probably come out ahead on the deal, maybe way ahead. This could turn into a money maker for US.

I think this is great. Not only does it say we're gonna be around for the long haul, it is the responsible thing for the corporation to do for downtown Tempe. The airline will (ulitmately) not be risking anything by adding condos/hotel/retail to the mix, but will the project will add quite a bit to downtown, especially on such an important piece of real estate like this.

While I'm no fan of our Tempe-centric culture, I'm happy that at least we're doing the right thing for urban design, allowing employees the ability to take light rail instead of driving, and the strengthening of an American downtown.

By the way, here's Continental's headquarters in Houston

Looking forward to getting to know the tempe area.

I like the idea. Sounds like Braniffs inovative campus of yesteryear

Exactly right. If you have good real estate it is bad business not to develop it.

Its important to note for those from the East side. This real estate was originally purchased by the original America West. Several years back, the old corporate headquarters of AWA was torn down to make room for the newly built AWA/US Airways corporate building. During this process, Tempe created..with much controversy..Tempe Town Lake..basically cut off a dry river bed on two ends and filled it with water. Tempe Town Lake has now transformed into a prime area of Tempe, which is where the HQ are located. The US Airways crew stay about a mile down the road from this site for their overnights. The HQ is positioned on Mill Avenue (prime real estate), ASU campus is within a 5 minute walk, Sun Devil Stadium 5 minutes. It makes total sense to adapt to this development and try to make some money as well.

By the way..the next time you fly into Phoenix and land heading west..look out to your left and you'll fly right to the side of the US Airways headquarters and downtown Tempe.

thanks for the info cactus. I guess there are some folks out there that thought it was a recent transaction. Looking forward to the relocation!!!!

Good news.

But, I'm not a light rail fan. Its a boondoggle. Will cost the city 10 bucks for each passenger, yet they charge 1 dollar to ride it. It travels at an average speed of 12mph, and when its 120 degrees out, what fun to wait for it, and have the doors open and close every 5 minutes! They say it will save gas, but for it to truly save gas, gasoline would have to be around 40 bucks a gallon.

Add in the fact that it will run in the middle of busy streets, and slowly snake across streets, it will cause traffic backups which will increase pollution, and will, most likely increase accidents.

Light rail is a huge, stupid boondoggle for us. It would be much more cost effective to buy a car for the people that will need to rely on its service.

Off my soapbox now.....

UW,

Thanks so much for the important information. I am one eastie that is excited about the headquarter in Tempe and i look forward to visiting if I ever get another PHX layover. I find the new management team to be open and inviting and look forward to a visit.

BTW, what is the policy for checking out the headquarters? Also, I think it's great that we are looking at a true headquarters that is like a campus. What a concept. Think AMR in Dallas..or is it Ft. Worth and UAL in Elk Grove.

I see the new US Airways preparing for the future and for once someone is thinking of the employees. Yes, everyone would LOVE a big raise, but I for one am just now starting to feel like a valued employee. It is because of the little things like $50 bucks for being #1 on otp, or the first birthday card I have ever gotten in the 19 years here. AND, NOBODY at the old US Airways EVER cared about the opinions of the employees. I have never seen as much opportunity to speak out as I have now. The old team had the "shut up, we're the experts. What do you know" mentality.

I can only speak for inflight, but you lead from the top and finally there is a kinder lower management team who has been put on notice the importance of treating the employees well. Again, being offered coffee in the crew room in the morning may seem small, but just ask how much it use to mean to the customers when places like GSO use to offer it for everyone (Piedmont day, mind you). Again, the little things.

So many of us easties have been beat down for so long that many will always be suspicious of any good jesture. That's life. Most of us have learned to either ignore them or call them on their crap. They werent happy when they were making top dollar.

I have no problem with the center of the US universe being in Tempe. Geez, it has to be somewhere and for too long I had to hear about every DC event and every PIT event, so paybacks are a biatch!!

BTW, UW, I think it was a great jesture for the PHX inflight to treat CLT inflight to Krispy Kremes and welcome us. KK's are gold in this part of the US, so it was appreciated. But don't do it often, we have enough middle aged mama's fighing the midrift bulge.

My only concern. Did the flight attendants know PHX inflight was doing this? The cynical side of me could not help but think, wait till the first Eastie transfers into PHX. Then they'll be THROWING donuts at us. I would hope not.

So UW, I have no plans to journey west anytime within the next 4 years if then. But I am developing alot of bronchial problems as I get older and the dry air seems to be better on my system. Will I be welcomed? Hopefully by the time I do make a move or even IF I make a move, everyone will be settled down about al the senority stuff.

You couldn't help yourself could you. Take it for what it is ... a gesture of kindess and goodwill! I trust your statement was in satire, because the rest of your statement was good and positive.

 Smart to develop this hot property, and make money the old fashioned way! As for the other pic of HQ, I dunno, but I see new development going and if it's a light rail .... going right where the new development is KA..CHING! It's ugly but it's life in the city. Take the 10 south or 40 east for about 50 miles see where that gets you!

I feel very positive about this. Everyone in this industry has been through the ringer it's about time to see some positive goings on.

As for all the naysayers, you hate it? Leave it! There's the jetbridge door, don't let it hit your fatarse on the way out.
