Hungary's carrier Malev on Thursday joined oneworld airline alliance, which includes British Airways, American Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

After several previous efforts to sell ailing Malev, the airline was bought last month by Russian-backed AirBridge, a Hungarian company backed by KrasAir, Russia's fourth-largest airline.

Malev's new chairman, Boris Abramovich, expressed confidence the Hungarian carrier would be successful as a oneworld member, which allows the airline to cooperate with other members on scheduling, ticketing, transfers and frequent flyer schemes, among other benefits.

"I am convinced that Malev will be able to handle the challenges of the future. Joining oneworld brings great tasks ... and opportunities, Abramovich said. "Malev has it all."

Malev doesn't really offer anything to oneworld. A better fit /network value would be if one of either Czech Airlines (skyteam) or Austrian (*) or Swiss (*) or even LOT (*) were to become a member of oneworld.
