A San Francisco man claims he was high on a double dose of medical marijuana cookies when he screamed, dropped his pants and attacked crew members on a cross-country flight, forcing its diversion to Pittsburgh, the FBI said Wednesday.

Kinman Chan, 30, was charged in a criminal complaint with interfering with the duties of a flight attendant on allegations that he fought with crew members of US Airways Flight 1447 from Philadelphia to Los Angeles on Sunday. His federal public defender, Jay Finkelstein, declined to comment.

This my favorite part: crew noticed his "pants were down, his shirt was untucked and all the compartments in the restroom were opened."

Am I a terrible person for laughing?

Oops, the title should have said "not be laughing.

Oh, and don't miss the reader comments.

I think you're just taking a pot shot at the guy. Oughta be ashamed!!

What's a "medical cookie"? Has Mrs. Fields become Dr. Fields? What's the co-pay on a ganja-raisin-oatmeal?

Be nice if this was used as evidence to shut down all these "medical marijuana" shams laws. I actually heard of a ramper at another airline testing positive. His union is defending him, and their claim is that his"medical marijuana" card makes it all right. No I don't know what ailment he has or claims to have.

If a licensed physician prescribes it, then he will probably get his job back. Really, is there much of a difference (in effect or urine results) between "medical marijuana" or the prescription drug Marinol?

The only real difference is that with Marinol, the blood sucking leeches known as the pharmaceutical industry get their outrageous prices, and with "medical marijuana,' the patient gets the relief as does his wallet.

I respectfully disagree.

Watch a loved one not be able to eat anything due to nausea from large doses of chemo or tremble in pain despite sky high doses of opiates.

There's a place for medical marijuana. Umm, but not on an airplane.

The FDA presumably says Marinol is acceptable as a prescription drug, marijuana has no accepted legal use. Since the FAA is the one that makes the laws governing drug use of airline employees I don't think they'll care one iota what any State says, especially when there are FDA approved medications that are prohibited on the ramp.

The FAA does not make laws governing drug use by airline employees. (The FAA does not make laws at all, actually, but regulations. Only Congress makes laws.) The FAA has regulations governing drug use by licensed airmen, but rampers are not licensed airmen. The DOT regulates that environment, and it is the DOT (not the FAA) that requires the drug testing.

There may be FDA medications that the DOT bans from the ramp. Marijuana-based intoxicants (including Marinol) have the unfortunate characteristic of being detected long after the drug has been ingested and any effects have worn off. This can be days, or even weeks, later.

all i want to know is if the FA's gave him a good work over ... man i hope they did .... take all that reserve frustration out on him ... let's make sure we send a message here at US Airways that if you cross the line on one of OUR planes ... you'll regret it for the rest of your life .... PTSD till you die lol ...

thank you come again !

You're right about who makes what. I actually knew that but was going through a mega brain fart. In any case, my points (substituting the proper authorities) are still quite valid. The DOT regulates rampers. The DOT says rampers can't use marijuana. Still the same result.

US 1447 is a PHL-SFO flight that operates only on a sunday night.

Cannabis is a drug just like any other such as nicotine, alcohol and the like. The government has no right to dictate to anyone what they may or may not put in their own body. How many people have been convicted of killing someone in a car accident while under the influence of cannabis? How many people have been convicted of killing someone while drunk?
