Japan

Of course there will be an economic impact on the global economy.

Sorry for being so selfish and heartless as to think about the 'little people' that have lost their possessions, lives, families and maybe even stock in Sony.

So, should I stop my donations and invest?
do both

LOL........dude you out of touch.....as you pretty much convey on these forums.
You succumb to the smokescreen of all this MSM reporting but yet fail to realize, the global effect.
All this devastation to their house, their country......we live in a global economy except in Texas.
The global economy was and is effected from about one second after the 8.9.

Give me this tasteless BS....wake up...the world turns at a must faster rate than you can comprehend.

Tasteless is dropping gas prices because of drop in global demand.

Tasteless dropped stocks globally .

Tasteless is your lame post.

Tasteless

I never said it was not affected. The whole freaking world knows it. What I said is that given the human toll, it seems pretty tasteless for the rest of the world to be b!tching about the economy when there are families in Japan wondering if they can find clean water to drink and food to eat or if they will be alive tomorrow because they are cut off from the rest of the world and have no idea if anyone knows where they are. I am pretty sure they do not give a rats ass about your gas prices or your stock portfolio and to be quite honest, I don't give a rats ass right now either. So how about you sit your butt down, pull the panties out from your crack and have a little freaking sympathy for someone else. There has been a a crisis and it will have an affect on your little world. Deal with it. Having people talk about in the media will not do a damn thing to change it. God damn, your narcissism gets really old sometimes.

So, once again you can't see the forest through the trees.
You got your shorts in a wad or what?
I have more sympathy than you'll ever fathom, even for you.

The cold hard fact here is that the ultimate economic impact WORLDWIDE may well exceed the human suffering which is admittedly a tall order. I sell for a Japanese Manufacturer and already we've been cautioned regarding availability of product due to the unfolding of events in Japan.

Shortly all of this will reach a conclusion radiation wise, tsunami wise and otherwise. Then the true impact will be assessed and the task of recovery will begin. It's relatively easy to clean up the debris and begin the rebuilding process provided the economic infrastructure is there to allow it to proceed. However despite being a creditor nation Japan has a public debt that would gag Linda Lovelace at something like 200% of GDP compared to our 90% + debt to GDP. Additionally Japan is a creditor nation mean they make things and sell them all over the world. How exactly do they accomplish this without infrastructure? How the hell are they even going to be able to provide the basics for their people.

How do you jump start the factories and start over producing to make & sell discounted product to finance your recovery when you can't even turn on the lights at half the plants? Suppose you get the lights on, then how do you get the product to port when the roads are gorked? If someone doesn't start coming up with some answers economically then the next big problem will be starvation in the areas affected most.

This post points out a fundamental difference between Liberal and Conservative viewpoint. With Liberals it's all about "Feelings" and "oh those poor people how can you be so insensitive to talk about money at a time like this". A conservative approach is more like "Holy Shite! Look at this mess, we had best figure out where we are and how we're going to fix this right now"

With one group it's all about feelings, with the other it's about action. It's foolish not to wonder how to pay for the rebuilding of Japan because of the fragile worldwide economy, we as a nation are not in a position to help as we could have before and Europe is worse off than us and despite their prowess as the third largest economy the Japanese can't do it themselves either. So where does that leave us? With a radiated, starving population in parts of Japan? I certainly hope not. Bottom line is Japan needs gobs upon gobs of money and somebody had best start to figure out where its all going to come from or you have a real possibility of a nightmare scenario.

Sometimes I forget what forum I'm posting to.

For this forum, I should have posted a humanity thread and a capitalistic thread.

My Bad...

Seriously I don't think you can have humanity with out an understanding of economics. The money has to come from someplace.

what good does it do to wring out collective hands?

Will the reactors cool as a result of the hand wringing?
Will those already dead be less dead because we cried?
Will those workers in the plants be any less radiated because we're sensitive?

Clearly the answer is NO! Me I'd rather pray for solutions than weep over the tragedy.

The only thing left at this point is for Godzilla to rise up from the waters next to Fukushima and start marching on Tokyo.....

I can not even imagine the idea of going through a MASSIVE earthquake, having a Tsunami come and wash away your town and then having to deal with radiation!! They also are dealing with no food or shelter and it is snowing!! I just hope these people with the worlds help can get back on their feet. And on a side note since the radiation will be reaching California tomorrow does anybody know where you can get KI tablets or if anything else will help. I know it is a small amount but I do plan on having a child in a year or two and want as little as radiation in my body as possible. Thanks and let's keep the people of Japan in our thoughts and prayers!

One could argue given some of the quotes from Politicians in CA that they have been irradiated for years!

Thoughts and Prayers are powerful tools to be sure. However nothing beats cold hard cash donated to a reputable charity. Everybody has to dig deep here. One less Big Mac Meal Deal per person per month will get the job done for the USA's contribution. One meal at McDonalds times every person in this country is a big assed chunk of money

I think Mickey'Ds would not like your analogy though... 😛 Robbing Peter to pay Paul will not help our economy... 🙄 Just saying... 😛

I completely agree with you that people need to put the cash where their well wishes are. like you said take that $5 you were going to spend on lunch and give it to a reputable charity that will help.

Apparently, TEPCO has a history of cover-ups.... http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-03-17/japan-nuclear-disaster-caps-decades-of-faked-reports-accidents.html

Might explain why the US NRC is breaking with tradition and contradicting what the Japanese authorities are reporting...
