STATEMENT BY JAMES C. LITTLE, DIRECTOR OF THE TRANSPORT WORKERS UNION AIR TRANSPORT DIVISION
ON AMR SECOND QUARTER EARNINGS REPORT
HURST, TX - Today AMR Corporation announced modest net earnings for second quarter 2004, despite skyrocketing fuel costs and continuing challenges faced by U.S. airlines in today’s economy. In fact, excluding special items (both gains and losses), this is the highest earnings report American Airlines has seen since 9-11.
As director of the TWU ATD, which represents 31,000 workers at American Airlines, I am extremely proud that our membership has played a leading role in turning this airline around. One year ago, we made major sacrifices to keep American out of bankruptcy and now we are beginning to see some results.
While we believe that management must share in the sacrifices we have made, we also believe that our membership must share in the benefits reaped by American’s improved financial picture. It is time for our members to get something back.
As American’s financial situation continues to improve, we will fight to get back what we lost when our contract reopens in 2006. We also will fight to ensure that the only reductions in staff at American will be made at the management level and that the company steps up efforts – along with the TWU’s own RO/IMAAC Committee - to continue to bring more work in-house.
The TWU ATD is committed to working with American Airlines and moving forward to a healthy economic future for our members and their families.
