US airlines saw modest RASM gain in July
Dateline: Wednesday August 25, 2004

US airline revenue per ASM rose 1.9% in July compared to the year-ago period, according to the Air Transport Assn.

Data exclude Southwest Airlines. The rate of improvement slowed from June, when system RASM rose 2.4% compared to June 2003.

Domestic RASM weakened for a third straight month, falling 1% on a 3.6% rise in ASMs after dipping 0.1% in June and 2.1% in May, according to Credit Suisse First Boston's James Higgins.

Pacific RASM jumped 23.3%, in part reflecting the impact of SARS in the year-ago period. Atlantic RASM climbed 11.3%, up from 10.1% in June. Latin America remained the weakest international region with RASM down 3.9%. The region is also the only one in which ASMs are growing faster than RPMs.

Although JP Morgan analyst Jamie Baker said the industry's performance last month exceeded his expectations, he added, "Despite July's apparent strength, we are increasingly concerned with carrier feedback regarding steep mid-August/September declines in forecasted revenue."--PF
